I cant make a wierder, more pleasurable adaptation of any classic literary work, except maybe for The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen. American McGees Alice can be a bizarre, surreal, and utterly fantastic game that sticks out from the endless sea of violent, slice-n-dice video gaming with tough-as-nails female protagonists. I mean, it is ALICE were discussing. As in, Wonderland. As in, cute bouncy blue dress and apron. As in, butcher knife. This aint the Disney movie.
This game functions kind of like an unofficial sequel to Lewis Carrolls books. When it opens, Alice is comatose within a mental institution. Shes had the experience for years, from the time the fire that destroyed her house and killed her parents. she had to hear their screams - - traumatic, huh? One day, a well-meaning nurse gives Alice a classic, battered stuffed the following thing you know, shes in Wonderland. Only its different. The landscape is dark, ugly, and riddled with loathsome tentacular growths. Her former friends are gaunt, unhealthy shadows of these old selves. The evil Red Queen has over, and it is up to Alice to regenerate Wonderland and save her sanity. Very symbolic.
Alice seems to be faithful towards the original books but still fling a lot of cool visuals within your face. At some point, Alice gets shrunk and has now to fight buzz-bombing ladybugs and flesh-eating mushrooms. Later on, she goes mano a mano together with the Mad Hatter in a very nightmarish, floating clockwork fortress. Most from the characters from your books make return appearances, although you will be rather unsettled if you see whats happened towards the March Hare as well as the Dormouse. There are a great number of nice touches to list out: the songs is haunting and gorgeous, the Saved Games screen is captivating, the Load Game graphic is beautiful and changes while you progress, etc. This is fine work using a talented team.
You will jump, climb, swim, float on drafts of air and slide on ice. Weapons are well-suited towards the theme, or else always terribly exciting. Enemies are varied and interesting, and powerups are all around. My only complaint would be together with the strict linearity of play. This will be the most fun Ive had with a different game for quite a long time.
Caveat: Despite its association which has a beloved work of childrens literature, this really is NOT a game title for kids. Themes and visuals are graphic and disturbing.
