The NPR Guide to Building a Classical CD Collection is really a good start but, it's its limitations. Ted Libbey gave himself an overwhelming task in putting this ebook together. He did a superb job around the two chapters on orchestral works and concertos, which comprise about half it. These chapters alone get this to book well worth the money. His commentary is concise without losing important detail. The reasons which he selected the recommended recordings are clearly spelled out. He provides the audiophile a real opportunity to know very well what is good inside a specific recording and what is missing. In many cases he provides a couple of choice and explains the differences between your recordings. Based on his commentary, I am obsessively trying to chose the Elan recording of Santiago Rodriguez playing Prokofiev s Piano Concerto No. 3.
As the guide progresses, however, the article author seems to get bored. His chapter on chamber music is adequate. Then, he zips through solo keyboard works and sacred music. By the time he gets on the last chapter on Opera she has given up. It is ridiculously short. The entire subject is included in 60 pages! It just isn't well edited. At some time he states that Leontyne Price is the good Aida of his era ; create does not mention her recording in this Verdi masterpiece. His recommendation of Mirella Freni s Aida can be a surprise. It is with this chapter that this author has did not give any advantages for his recommendations. And so, we have been left puzzled. What is wrong with Leontyne Price s Aida? All of Marilyn Horne s opera recordings are overlooked. He correctly lists the brilliant Victoria de los Angeles and Jussi Bjorling recording of La Boheme, but isn't able to note that this is really a mono recording. Read more

I love this book. It has been the one guide my wife and I purchased to flesh out our bunch of art music recordings for in close proximity to a year now. However it has major problems.
While everyone certainly has their most favorite composers and genres of music, the number of space committed to Jean Sibelius defies all logic. While he was certainly great and wrote greater stuff than I could ever write, how much space devoted toward this relatively obscure composer is indefensible in light of all of the composers ignored, even his 2nd number of 350 inside back. No functions Telemann, Bach, Corelli, Poulenc, Satie, or Couperin precisely what does he have from the French?.
What is much more glaring will be the neglect some on the greatest composers ever recieve. Libby spotlights Handel being a major maestro after which lists a paltry three of his works. They are his greatest to get sure, however if one is planning to include him alongside Beethoven, Brahms, Mozart, Tchaikovsky, Bach and Haydn you need to list over three pieces. Even worse is poor Schubert who, not simply unlucky enough being overshadowed by Beethoven his life insurance coverage, now should be grossly under represented here and never even given major maestro status. His lieder are inexplicably lumped within the chamber music vividly illustrating Libbys neglect of vocal and choral music. That none of Vivaldis highly influencial sacred music just isn't included can be another crime. He seems lucky to acquire the Four Seasons in.
That, in excess of Libbys fascination with Sibelius, could be the greatest flaw on this book. Read more
Ted Libbey, of NPR fame, is often a compelling guide towards the 350 essential works of classical music presented in this particular book. Not only does he give you a convincing listing on the basic canon and recommended recordings to settle for it, but actually is well liked supplies a insightful absorbing anecdotal information to spice up the proceedings. For example, I had for ages been impressed by the climate of suspense and foreboding created by the first movement of Mozarts C Minor Piano Concerto K. 491; Mr. Libbey reproduces the grotesque face which the composer drew for the mansucript to indicate that Mozart felt like. The musical works inside the book are categorized in six sections: orchestral works, concertos, chamber music, solo keyboard works, sacred and choral music and ultimately opera. I must admit that I happen to be strongly depending this book when beginning my explorations of chamber music and solo piano pieces, and I am convinced that The NPR Guide will prove equally helpful to other readers thinking about class
An outstanding help guide building a classical CD a classical music collector as well as a listener of public radio, I find this guide to become very essential, even for those that already have a CD book is within six chapters:Chapter one tells about music for orchestra, chapter two about concertos, chapter three on chamber music, chapter four on solo keyboard develop chapters five and six tells about vocal works, including, sacred music, secular choral music, and opera by various composers of various also offers great information about each work that she tells about. The book also offers funny illustrations about composers and performers resulting in circumstances sorrounding certain favourite may be the illustration from the violinist where explains about Beethovens Razumosvsky quartet 1 onpage 305, the chapter about chamber music. The book also shows pictures of composers, performers, and book is of great value and help for classical music lovers you probably did a marvelous job. Thanks for this brilliant guide.A five stars in

As a raw beginner, I can t read music. Having the MIDI files to name the notes about the keyboard is usually a tremendous assistance to me.
All the pieces within the collection are musically beautiful and as a consequence a great pleasure to know. There is no likelihood of wrong learning because all fingering is shown plus the MP3 files allow that you hear exactly what the piece should appear to be.
You are creating a fine service, thanks.
Perfect for adult beginners! by Lou

At age of 36 I ve decided to master piano - but also for an adult it gets quite boring to learn Twinkle Little Star and Mary Had a Little Lamb repeatedly.
I figured I d learn a good deal faster if could actually practice playing the background music which I enjoy enjoying.
Thank Goodness I ve found the Very Easy Collection!!! It s what exactly I was in search of - - pieces which I love playing, and simplified for convenient learning and playing.
I honestly never imagined I d be able to try out with the hands, and that I d also be able to learn Toccata myself, with not many weeks of practice!
Thank you a lot for this collection. The magic is both inside the choice of pieces, and inside simplified transcriptions which I never even knew existed until I discovered your internet site.
Great for beginner to intermediate pianists!
on February 2, 2008 1:04 am PST
This music is designed for my piano possess some beginner to intermediate pianists, which often Ive been surfing to find classical music for, and this set of classical pieces figured out great! I was searching for world renown compositions by some in the greatest composers, and lastly found an abridged assortment to the beginner/intermediate student!

Thanks for making it available on the internet!!! My kids like it!
Well done virtual Sheet Music, this collection is perfect especially to the young music enthusiast. A problem that I see primarily childrenas music books is which the pieces is usually deemed as not real pieces. We all love Faber and Faber, but children, especially those that start older really want to experiment with music that they can hear about for piano, and music they hear everyday. This book hits this problem right for the head and supplies them music through the masters simplified to allow them to play it.
This was obviously a well put together arrangement which make it easy for just a beginning child to try out. Better arrangements than other classical peices I have reviewd.
