A long time ago inside a galaxy far, far lived an instrument teacher who a bright idea. Although bright ideas are not his typical thing, on that day he felt particularly enlightened.
He knew that many of his guitar students needed to play lead guitar. He knew they were ready to go ahead and take leap.
And from his vast experience, he knew that playing lead guitar was just a matter of mastering a few elementary moves and combining these to form seemingly complex phrases of musical genius.
Note : Although it would have been fun to help keep the musical genius myth going, he knew that playing hot licks had not been the result of genius - in fact, he previously learned to accomplish it himself. And he was no genius. Just a guy that has a dream.
So he devised a fairly easy plan to get his students rockin on target. This plan was built using a foundation of movements that appear over and over in the lead guitar universe. And thus was given birth to The Ten Basic Lead Guitar Moves.
Although there's more to guide guitar far more than The Ten Basic Moves, anything that is more complicated seemingly flows from or incorporates these common phrases. They are the lessons of lead playing, but not the end-all.
Of course, guitarists who will be new to guide playing can t need to jump in and handle complicated movements. So these licks are made to get the new lead player movin and groovin in the way that they could handle.
Please realize that the Ten Basic Moves are simply that: movements. They can be put on to any strings, any frets not just inside the spots that I m going to demonstrate.
Think ones as movement ideas. Although a few of them perform best when performed the way I provide you with like Move 10, most with the other moves may be adjusted to work with whatever fingers, frets or strings are expected or desired back then. Get creative!
The Ten Basic Moves have another thing in common: they each incorporate slurs.

IMPORTANT! : Slurs would be the next step once you ve gotten your left hand coordination and picking technique in check. If you haven t gotten command over those elements yet, check out The Best Guitar Exercise, Period.
I developed the Ten Basic Moves for that standard, minor pentatonic Box 1 pattern. This particular pattern is arguably by far the most important one inch pop, rock, blues and country styles, therefore it makes sense to start out here.
Remember, scale patterns are moveable and they are named with regards to root note. This one has its own root note on string 6. I ve played and tabbed all of the examples inside the key of A minor root on fret 5. But of course it is possible to move the pattern around the fretboard, with all the Ten Basic Moves in whatever key you'll want.
It s recommended that you have the ability to play with the pattern with alternate picking along with with slurs ascending with hammer-ons and descending with pull-offs before tackling The Ten Basic Moves. It will make life easier.

Thanks alot jim. I surely can hear that runners are the blocks in most rock solos I listen too. I could already breeze thru scales, quick triplet alternate picking etc and double hand tapping stuff but had neglected the basics. This has made improvising with my band a hell of alot easier. Can you explain the real difference between 2 and 7, they sound precisely the same apart from due to being on different strings
