This page contains simple fixes for Adobes PDF preview handler and thumbnails on 64-bit versions of Windows.
Only the thumbnails fix continues to be needed, unless of course you upgraded from Vista to Windows 7, where both fixes can always be needed. Half a year after I published the knowledge, Adobe finally incorporated the preview handler fix but no thumbnails fix, plus they leave the preview handler broken in case you upgraded from Vista to Windows 7 to the installer for Adobe Reader 9.3.2 April 2010.
Maybe this season Adobe will are able to fix the thumbnails also; for now you can get my fix for him or her below.:-
Preview handlers are lightweight components which allow you to view various file types within programs like Windows Explorer in Windows Vista and Windows 7, Outlook 2007/2010 and Directory Opus via my bundled plugin.
Adobe Reader is sold with Adobes PDF preview handler nevertheless the installer were built with a mistake which meant the preview handler wouldn't work on 64-bit systems.
It ended up the problem may very well be fixed by way of a simple registry change. The change is described below plus a small program which performs the fix can also be provided for your convenience.
Unlike the thumbnail fix, described below, the preview handler fix should not be needed by the majority of people, since Adobe have recently fixed their installer, however it is still provided should it helps repair things. If you needed Adobe Reader installed under Vista and then upgraded to Windows 7 you will probably still have to run the preview handler fix once to scrub up a registry value which Adobe set inconsistently relating to the two OS versions. If in doubt, run the fix and will also tell you contrary needs being done. If all things are good already next the preview handler fix wont change anything.
Adobe Readers capacity to generate thumbnails for Windows Explorer, File- Open/Save dialogs, etc. continues to be broken, out with the box, on 64-bit systems. This is because Adobe still havent produced a 64-bit version in their thumbnail generator or much else, in truth.
Fixing the thumbnail problem was more difficult than the preview handler one, but fixes for both is now found below.
While fixing the thumbnails I took the chance improve the way they search. The white border around each thumbnail is removed.
December 2014: A new, improved version is originating soon!
The installer and executables are digitally signed. Thanks to GPSoftware for signing them in my opinion.
An uninstaller is provided.
Note about jumbled-up PDF thumbnails: Some people PDF thumbnails appearing on top of the wrong files. As far as I can tell, it had been yet another error on Adobes part. Hopefully the most recent version fixes this, although I only got one confirmation up to now. Note that you will ought to clear your thumbnail cache: Run Disk Cleanup before it starts menu, select C:, put a tick inside Thumbnails checkbox after which click OK.
A not enough people have inspired to be able to donate money to convey thanks with the fixes. You dont must but in case you send money to via PayPal and make an email that its for your PDF fix, itll reach me. That isnt actually my account this can be a first time Ive needed one since I closed mine a little while ago but it is a member of a friend who'll pass on the cash provided the note helps it be clear who its for.:-
For the preview handler problem, I wrote a plan to automate the necessary registry changes. You just run the tool and click Apply Fix. The tool takes of all the so-called details differences between Windows 7 clean vs upgrade installs.
This program was developed in my free time and is distributed for free. I wrote it due for the popularity from the fix, to aid non-technical people, and also to celebrate Adobe ignoring the situation for another 90 days even though the solution was handed to them with a plate. I hope this can help more people.
Details in the registry fix continue to be provided below, for people who wish to make changes yourself, but with all the program is suggested for a lot of people, especially less technical people.
Tells you however needs fixing while offering to fix things if that's the case.
Understands differences between XP, Vista, Windows 7 and upgrade installs.
Requests elevation via UAC.
Checks that youre using 64-bit Windows.
Checks that Adobe Reader is installed.
Checks that Adobe Readers preview handler is a member of PDF files. If not the information asked should you want to associate it. This does not affect what are the results when you double-click PDF files; make use of the Open-With menu with the.
Checks that Adobe Readers preview handler is registered under their 32-bit and 64-bit registry aforementioned is required correctly to work under 64-bit Office 2010 beta however, not the retail version of Office 2010.
Allows one to undo the fix. Only the fix itself. If you changed the association and would like to go back then youll most often have to reinstall or repair-install your alternative viewer.
Does not have to be installed or uninstalled and, other compared to fix itself, leaves nothing behind.
Is digitally signed to help you detect when it has been tampered with. Thanks to GPSoftware for signing the exe in my opinion.
The preview handler fix should stop required for Adobe Reader 9.3.2 and above until you had previously installed Adobe Reader on Windows Vista after which upgraded to Windows 7. If you fall into your latter group then you'll definitely still have to run the preview handler fix once to wash-up some mess that Adobes installer leaves behind.
Note that, during the time of writing, Adobes website only permits you to download Adobe Reader 9.3.0 so you must run its update checker after setting it up in order to get the most recent version together with the x64 fix. Adobe are often too lazy/incompetent/negligent to copy the newest installer thus to their website while older versions of Adobe Reader generally serious security flaws which can be being exploited from the wild and despite the fact that making people update just after installing often causes an unnecessary reboot. Sigh.
With earlier versions of Adobe Reader, you may should re-apply the fix in the event you update or re-install Adobe Reader.
The fix is just needed on 64-bit versions of Windows that contain Adobe Reader installed. Theres no need for that fix on 32-bit versions of Windows. If youre undecided what you've got use Start - Control Panel - System and Security - System and look with the reported system type.
If you might be using a pre-release version of Office 2010 64-bit: Newer versions from the fix should work for you too. Note that this retail RTM version of Office 2010 fixed the advantages of additional registry changes. The fix tool presently has a checkbox to specify whether you need the Office 2010 beta fixes.
The fix requires Administrator access UAC elevation given it modifies values below HKEYLOCALMACHINE from the registry.
What the fix does is explicitly documented screenshot in Microsofts guidelines on registering preview handlers therefore it shouldnt cause any problems.
The fix affects Windows Explorer and Outlook although not Internet Explorer. IE uses the entire Adobe Reader, not the preview handler, and Adobe Reader includes a problem with IE8 and/or Windows 7 where it opens a standalone window for PDF files even when its configured to produce PDFs inside the browser. The fix wont affect that.
You do not must apply the fix to produce PDF viewing operate in newer versions of Directory Opus. My bundled viewer plugin carries a workaround built-in.
Users on earlier versions of Opus may run to the same problem that affects IE8 and/or Windows 7. Update to Opus 9.1.3.4 or over.
v1.2.0.0 28/Apr/2010: Now includes a checkbox to specify extra fixes for Office 2010 beta which can be no longer important for Office 2010 RTM. Also updated the link to reflect how the preview handler fix should not required with Adobe Reader 9.3.2 and above. Thanks to Alex Bantzhaff for noticing and letting me know!
v1.1.0.1 04/Feb/2010: Updated the material it displays to reflect the new/separate thumbnails fix.
v1.1.0.0 25/Jan/2010: Added fix for issue with 64-bit Office 2010. Thanks to Winfried Pohl for giving the extra step!
v1.0.0.1 15/Dec/2009: Initial release.
If you would like to apply the preview handler registry fix using group policy, see Alan Burchills guide.
If you wish to apply the preview handler registry fix manually, or are simply curious concerning the detail:
First, read all on the section above in regards to the tool. Most from the information will also apply to doing the fix manually ,.
If it doesnt exist you might not have Adobe Reader installed from the first place. Or Adobe can have changed where did they install it. Or you can be on 32-bit Windows. Or you could possibly be on 64-bit Windows but have run the 32-bit version of by accident.
There ought to be an existing AppID value, incorrectly set to 6d2b5079-2f0b-48dd-ab7f-97cec514d30b
Now determine if the same registry path exists but devoid of the Wow6432Node part. If it does exist, have the same change as before. If it doesnt exist then thats fine so you can skip this part.
This second area will exist if Adobe Reader was attached with Windows Vista. That includes Vista machines which are later upgraded to Windows 7. I think its because of changes within the way 32-bit registry redirection works in Windows 7. If you might have both values you should change both; when you only have one you only ought to change any particular one.
If that you are using 64-bit Office 2010 beta next the second area with no Wow6432Node must exist with the preview handler to be effective. Copy the registry keys/values there whether it doesnt exist. Or just makes use of the automated tool above since it will do this to suit your needs. This extra step will not be required for that retail RTM version of Office 2010; only for that beta.
If you might have/had another PDF preview handler installed, for example FoxIt or PDF-XChange, then whichever handler was installed last in most cases be the the one that is used. Uninstalling preview handlers doesn't always put back the earlier ones; instead, execute a repair install or maybe a re-install with the preview handler you want to use so it takes over the PDF preview handler registration. You can also accomplish this by editing the PDF file-type inside registry. The tool above attends to this and all of the other issues so use that should you get stuck.
To fix the thumbnails, I wrote a 32/64-bit thumbnail bridge that allows 64-bit programs like Windows Explorer approach 32-bit thumbnail generators like Adobe Readers.
As soon because you install the bridge you ought to see PDF thumbnails can be found in Windows Explorer, File- Open/Save dialogs, etc.
The thumbnail bridge also trims the white border which Adobe Reader places across the thumbs it generates, causing them to be look significantly better. As a result, even 32-bit users may want to install it.
If you get that your thumbnails still don't work after installing the thumbnail bridge, perform Repair install of Adobe Reader to be sure its thumbnail generator is correctly installed. The thumbnail bridge provides translator involving the 32- and 64-bit worlds and will not actually generate the thumbnails itself; nonetheless relies on Adobe Reader for doing that.
Windows XP-x64 users: Sorry, however the thumbnail fix requires Windows Vista or over.
v1.0.0.4 09/Apr/2011: Public release 02/May/2011. This hopefully fixes one more problem in Adobes thumbnailer which caused PDF thumbnails for files within a folder for getting jumbled up. You should clear your thumbnail cache, too.
v1.0.0.3 06/Feb/2011: Fixed problem of black thumbnails appearing. This was caused by a bug inside Windows shell that I had to figure around. See comment I put into IThumbnailProvider::GetThumbnail for technical info.
v1.0.0.2 05/Feb/2010: Fixed one which meant small process might have stayed around more than it had to.
v1.0.0.1 04/Feb/2010: Initial release.
If the PDF preview handler receives its first WMMOUSEWHEEL messages in the event it doesnt have the target then it will begin to draw blank pages instead from the document contents while its scrollbar will frequently change size to show a long document only carries a few pages.
UPDATE 11/Sep/2009: If the PDF preview handler is scrolled by rapidly pushing the cursor or page up/down keys, it could draw blanks likewise. Screenshot.
When the PDF preview handler has the attention it draws an ugly dotted-line border around its toolbar in the bottom. It looks enjoy it thinks its in ActiveX design mode as well. Zoomed-in screenshot.
Not a bug but itd be nice if it a simple text-search feature, please.
Well accomplished for releasing Adobe Reader X in a very state the place that the preview handlers mousewheel and scrollbar don't work properly. Outstanding work, of course! -.-
Its constant excitement, maintaining working Adobe PDF support and tidying up Adobes mess at all times, let me show you!
Directory Opus uses my bundled plugin to be a bridge for assorted third-party viewers, including Adobe Reader whether installed. I made earlier versions makes use of the full Adobe Reader automagically. I were required to write a 64-to-32-bit ActiveX proxy process to increase the risk for Adobe Reader and Flash viewers work within 64-bit Opus. A lot of effort as a result of Adobe being so lax at producing 64-bit components. Adobe Reader was originally used instead with the preview handler as a consequence of various issues with all the preview handler.
Then Windows 7 was released and Adobe Reader embedding was completely broken. That could possibly be Microsofts fault but my bet is its Adobes. So I worked about the preview handler issues, such as main one this site is about, and that is currently the default in Opus.
I wish I could bill Adobe for time fixing their mess. The ridiculous thing is the fact that whenever weve experimented with officially inform Adobe of bugs inside their code like blindly calling by having a null pointer after having a failed QueryInterface, bugs which weve found and worked around for ourselves but which could cause problems persons, theyve asked us to repay them for just a support contract. WTF? Who is supporting whom here, exactly?
I dont think CS represents Creative Suite anymore; Im fairly sure it is in reality the favourite word of Deadwoods Mr.
This will not be to mention the continual stream of security issues in Adobe Reader and Adobe Flash, Adobe management believing that releasing patches every 11 weeks is a fast response faster than whenever they were all the more useless, maybe, although not fast enough when their software program is the 1 malware vector for your last couple of years, the way in which the Flash and Reader update checkers complete a terrible job of informing people of updates even after they are critical, just how you should update Flash in each browser separately, the best way Adobe try to generate you put in a download manager thats probably as large as the thing it really downloads which isnt sufficient to warrant a download manager, in either case, how you download the Reader installer with a new machine then run the updater to locate theres a MONTHS OLD update they couldnt be bothered to package to the main installer despite the fact that the update is blatantly precisely the same size and overall content because main installer, the still-unfixed bugs in Reader and Photoshop under Windows 7 when maximizing with Aero, the foolish decision to feature JavaScript to PDF for more security issues as though a file format only suitable for storing legacy paper-based documents really needed interactivity due to the obvious risks that are included with JavaScript despite the presence of good programmers/management. Heck, even the most recent version of Photoshop CS4, normally the one Adobe app I actually like, has had a nose-dive regarding its UI. Sigh. What is wrong to be able company? Okay, they didnt write iTunes or Lotus Notes, but theyre getting
Writing from the thumbnail fix was funded by somebody that wishes to remain anonymous yet still deserves thanks, including of which for allowing the fix to be distributed for free for free to everybody else.
The post and discussion regarding the original version of the fix at Ed Botts Windows Expertise unearthed further useful information and caveats on different Windows installs. That information has become incorporated to the fix tool and this article. Credit to Ed and also the commenters on his blog with regards to help.
Winfried Pohl contains the credit for discovering the additional step needed to mend the preview handler under 64-bit Office 2010 beta. Thanks, Winfried! Update: MS also fixed the retail RTM version of Office 2010 in order that it no longer requires this extra step.
Thanks to Alex Bantzhaff getting in touch after he noticed that this installer for Adobe Reader 9.3.2 incorporated the preview handler registry fix. Adobe didnt mention it within the change log, not to say credit me to find it, but a minimum of they finally fixed it. Maybe theyll fix the thumbnails pick up?:
Thanks to Jonathan Van Dusen for pointing out which the preview handler fix remains needed, despite Adobe Reader 9.3.2, for individuals that upgraded from Vista to Windows 7. This is because Adobes installer is inconsistent about which registry values it sets within the different OS and so on Windows 7 it isn't able to remove/update some incorrect values left out by previous installs on Vista. My fix tool will take care of this and clean things up.
Thanks to everyone the people who spent the time to e-mail me to mention thanks themselves, along with confirming how the fixes worked for the kids. Its great to learn that more and more people have found the fixes useful.

Its constant excitement, maintaining working Adobe PDF support and taking care of Adobe s mess at all times, let me explain to you!

The ridiculous thing is the fact whenever weve attemptedto officially inform Adobe of bugs of their code like blindly calling via a null pointer after having a failed QueryInterface, bugs which weve found and worked around for ourselves but that might cause problems persons, theyve asked us to pay for them for just a support contract. WTF? Who is supporting whom here, exactly?
I dont think CS means Creative Suite anymore; Im fairly sure it is really the favourite word of Deadwoods Mr.
This will not be to mention the continual stream of security issues in Adobe Reader and Adobe Flash, Adobe management convinced that releasing patches every ninety days is a fast response faster than once they were all the more useless, maybe, although not fast enough when their software packages are the 1 malware vector to the last year or so, the way in which the Flash and Reader update checkers execute a terrible job of informing people of updates even after they are critical, just how you must update Flash in each browser separately, just how Adobe try for making you use a download manager thats probably as huge as the thing it really downloads which isnt large enough to warrant a download manager, no matter what, just how you download the Reader installer with a new machine then run the updater to get theres a MONTHS OLD update which they couldnt be bothered to package to the main installer even though the update is blatantly the identical size and overall content as being the main installer, the still-unfixed bugs in Reader and Photoshop under Windows 7 when maximizing with Aero, the foolish decision to provide JavaScript to PDF for a lot more security issues almost like a file format only suitable for storing legacy paper-based documents really needed interactivity considering the obvious risks that is included in JavaScript despite the presence of good programmers/management. Heck, even the most recent version of Photoshop CS4, usually the one Adobe app I actually like, has brought a nose-dive with regards to its UI. Sigh. What is wrong achievable company? Okay, they didnt write iTunes or Lotus Notes, but theyre getting
FoxIt along with the FoxIt preview handler also operate in Office/IE/Explorer/Opus, when you prefer them. Personally, I find Adobe s font rendering simpler to read, despite my other complaints. PDF-XChange works, too, though I only discovered it recently and havent put on the extender much.
Writing in the thumbnail fix was funded by a person that wishes to remain anonymous but nevertheless deserves thanks, most famously of which for allowing the fix to be distributed for free for free to all others.
The post and discussion around the original version with this fix at Ed Botts Windows Expertise unearthed further useful information and caveats on different Windows installs. That information may be incorporated into your fix tool and these pages. Credit to Ed and also the commenters on his blog because of their help.
Winfried Pohl provides the credit for discovering the additional step needed to repair the preview handler under 64 - bit Office 2010 beta. Thanks, Winfried! Update: MS also fixed the retail RTM version of Office 2010 in order that it no longer requires this extra step.
Thanks to Alex Bantzhaff when getting in touch after he noticed which the installer for Adobe Reader 9.3.2 incorporated the preview handler registry fix. Adobe didnt mention it inside the change log, not to mention credit me to find it, but at the very least they finally fixed it. Maybe theyll fix the thumbnails next season?:
Thanks to Jonathan Van Dusen for pointing out that this preview handler fix is needed, despite Adobe Reader 9.3.2, for many who upgraded from Vista to Windows 7. This is because Adobe s installer is inconsistent about which registry values it sets for the different OS additionally, on Windows 7 it doesn't remove/update some incorrect values that is left behind by previous installs on Vista. My fix tool will handle this and clean things up.
Thanks to any or all the people who used your time to e-mail me to express thanks themselves, as well as for confirming that this fixes worked for the children. Its great to recognise that lots of people have found the fixes useful.

Yeah olive Im on Windows 7x64 too and it also IS slow. A one page text pdf takes ten seconds to open up instead of one. After some messing around I discovered that the slow initially. Once you open several pdf files several times everything becomes normal like Adobe Reader 9.
Kinda annoying, I do feel that adobe took a stride backwards with reader X. The buttons now look very sub par as far a graphics go. Hope something gets done concerning this when 10.1 happens, I dislike using other pdf readers.
Same thing here. I have a Compaq 8510p with 4gb RAM plus a SSD disk drive, running windows 7 x64. Adobe Reader X is SO slow opening files that I went back to Adobe Reader 9. Whats interesting is always that I have Adobe Reader X using a Dell Latitude D630 with only 1gb RAM and also a 7200 rpm HDD, running Windows XP, and yes it files perfectly.

Yes it can be a bit slow. So shut down the plugins Google this it's not necessary. Other than that, you cant beat the compatibility. Some PDF readers dont do certain features right. I use Okular on Linux but sometimes I ought to fallback to Adobe Reader the Linux binary; on Windows I have this installed and SumatraPDF. The latter is great when you need something really fast nevertheless its features are limited. Meanwhile Adobe Reader can understand protected embedded fonts making other readers make text appear like crap sometimes, plus it supports a great many other DRM-like features. So you kinda gotta get it, no matter what OS you have.
Too bloated for my liking, installed foxit reader tho im beginning wonder about the exact same thing so have installed sumatra pdf now thats minuscule took only 2.5 secs to put in after tapping install button i kid you not

Adobe Reader XI allows one to easily read and enter information into PDF files.
Form submission: Adobe Reader allows someone to easily enter information over a PDF form and submit it.
Attention to develop: Reader looks great, along with the interface is extremely easy to understand.
Good control: Reader offers excellent treating any document youre viewing. You can zoom, navigate, and check large documents very effectively.
Clunky installation: Installing Reader is clunky. After downloading the file, the Adobe installer launches, which executes a long installation process. Then once you finally launch the app, your pc informs you who's needs to configure the program after which restart your personal computer.
Adobe wrote the ebook on PDF software, and Reader lives around its pedigree. It is, the bottomline is, the most effective program readily available for this purpose. If you work with PDFs lots, youll want it attached with your system.
From Adobe Systems: Adobe Reader enables you to read and print from any system any document created as a possible Adobe Portable Document Format PDF file, having its original appearance preserved. PDF files are compact and could be shared, viewed, navigated, and printed exactly as being the author intended by you aren't Adobe Reader.

Absolutely regret updating to DC from 11. It was so simple to use as well as simple which I like. There was no issue with 11 why fix something which doesnt need a complete make over. If only there were a way to go
Ive been an Adobe user for many years, which new Reader DC seems the worst software application by a reputable company Ive ever discover. Are we still from the Beta? Is this likely to improve? Bad stuff, Adobe. If you were aiming to frustrate regular folks who have to figure files then congratulations over a job well done.
I sent 5 emails for system driver support without replies.
My 1st call I was on hold for one hour, 17 minutes when someone found, then I was disconnected. 2nd contact hold for 6 hours waiting with the next available customer representative to reflect high volume customer calls. Totally Yep, Still looking forward to help. Patience my ass
I dont believe no person works from the office. Was it the cleaning crew that found the first call and hung up on me. No one answered as I listened for the recording high level of calls which tune 6 hours, Unacceptable!
Completely useless. I put on the extender at university to write in to the provided slides. With the new edition it gets so complicated and it also is hardly an option anymore. I needed to downgrade.
Horrible Interface, poor image quality.
Honestly, I cant imagine one.
Poor document image quality, painful towards the eyes. Storing files might be more difficult.
Everything seems meant to force you to make use of the cloud. I dont want a greater portion of my stuff floating within the ether. I want to buy on one of my multiple secured multi-terrabyte hard disk drives. I dont want to buy out there!

The new interface is painful to appear at- poor icons, minimal contrast relating to the document along with the menucontrol areas.
New features are simply just not really worth pain this interface causes to my eyeballs.
Very poor image quality. Will be using alternatives.
May involve some additional features.
Image very difficult to read.
