When comparing the 2 main big players inside rapid eLearning market, Articulate, and Adobe, they approach mobile learning design verydifferently.
Articulate, one example is, has gonethe native app route for deployinglearning projects to tablets and HTML5 for smartphones such as the iPhone as well as the Moto X. They have a very good app called Articulate Mobile Player, which initially was just available forthe iPadand now could be also available for Android Tablets. The challenge on this native app approach is building and native apps for just a myriad of mobile os, screen sizes, and resolutions, which can be a tough task which strategymay not scale advancing in my opinion. For the learner is another app to download totheir smartphone and after that there s the matter of installing apps inside certain IT corporations.
Also whilst the experience of consuming an e-learning course on Articulate s Mobile Player on Tabletsis great better on iPad vs. Android, this same course using a smartphone via their HTML5 output is virtually unusable and instead gives off a lot being desired.
I actually imagine that Adobe, by embracing Responsive Design principles inCaptivate 8, will be in a better mobile learning direction, since it helps users design flexible and fluid m-Learning, that could be consumed on desktops, tablets and smartphones, without making use of installing a supplementary app.
If you're new to Responsive Design, it isn t necessarily just one technology you can point to, but a number of principles aided by a number of HTML5 technologies including CSS media queries, fluid grids and flexible images and videos.
In earlier days of mobile, most companies tried to appeal to their mobile users by creating two versions of these website, one for desktop users plus a lighter, less powerful mobile version for users arriving at their site having a mobile device. This approach quickly becamea nightmare due to the need to maintain two groups of code, plus the inability to predict where people could well be coming from, and for that reason often times desktop users would arrive about the mobile version and mobile users would land for the desktop version from the site, setting up a complete mess.
Luckily more and much more companies have become re-building their websites having a Mobile-first mentality along with a Responsive Design approach.
With Responsive Design, the reasoning is to maintain and point people to just one URL, usinga single group of content about the back end, when using the same code, and by making use of CSS Media Queries, deliver great experiences across multiple devices, including desktop and laptops, tablets and smartphones and inside near future, wearables such as iWatch and Google Glass.
This is just how we should look at the future of learning design and consumption, we ought to focus on designing learning which is flexible and fluid across multiple screens; intelligent learning, very often points learners to 1 URL, and steer clear of at all causethe need forinstalling different native apps for several mobile os's, to ensure that learners to gain access to the learning.
Just because web community has embraced the One Web philosophy, we too should embrace a One Learning design paradigm.
And this is the reason in my humble opinion, the desolate man mobile learning design looks brighter for Adobe, and I seeCaptivate 8 asa great first steptoward this vision. With Captivate 8, Adobe commoditizes the development of best-in-class mobile learning, while not having to know much around the technology behind the scenes, as well as me this can be a game-changer inthe transition from e-Learning to m-Learning!
Having stated that, listed below are 10 things Adobe gets right about Mobile Learning with Captivate 8:
When I worked atAdobe, a very important factor I always have been told by newcomers to Captivate was who's was difficult to acquire started, with the lack of templates. This is why I really much like the new splash screen you obtain when you launch Captivate 8. You now have selections for starting a blank project, a project based onyour own project template or at a PowerPointfile, from the software simulation, a movie demo and lastly now for designing aResponsive project.
I feel so strongly about Responsive Design being the desolate man learning design, that I would recommend youto focus on a Responsive Project even when initially you will possibly not be thinking of mobile learning.
When you ultimately choose to commence with a Responsive Project, you automatically get three layouts, namely one to the desktop 1024px, a 2nd one for your tablet 768px along with a one for that smartphone 360px. All three of these options may be adjusted in case you want to concentrate on your learning to some differentscreen resolution.
I think this is often a good start, but I d want to see more flexibility regarding adding more breakpoints, in addition to options for when learners rotate their screen. One thing that's obvious for me, mind you, these resolutions are organized from left to right is Adobe isthinking desktop-first, tablet-second and mobile-last. I m a mobile-first advocate so I can have put Mobile first, Tablet second and Desktop last. But again, this can be a terrific way to acquire learning professionals contemplating m-Learning, so kudos to Adobe!
If your design demands absolute dimensions, you might have already failed!
Smart multi-device design must be fluid inside the way water is, whatever container you placed water into, water becomes that container. This is why I m pumped up about being able to opt for a percentage value when defining the scale and placement of objects inside properties tab in Adobe Captivate 8. As I wrote above regarding the three primary ingredients of responsive design, flexible images is essential and by sizing and positioning images using percentage values, you're able to include images that could work everywhere byadjusting their size and position based on whatever devices is utilized by learner.
For long now we have already been designing learning for your precision from the connected mouse and keyboard, however, touch computing turns this paradigm on its head, and that we now must design for your not-so precise finger if not more accurately, for that ergonomics with the thumbs. Luckily Captivate 8 causes it to become a breeze to be sure learners can navigate the educational using touch gestures like taps and swipes. Enabling this feature will assure that learners doesn't only be able to utilize the mouse for the desktop and as easy, utilize the fingers on cellular devices, and that is exactly how it has to be.
As you train with Responsive Projects, you will need to preview them with your default browser and here s something you are going to really enjoy in Captivate 8, there s a slider you'll be able to drag left and right to acquire a previewof that this various break points works across multiple devices with various physical sizes and resolutions.
Here s a fast animation showing disappears, notice how objects flow through the width from the screendepending for the resolution, especially as I move the slider to your right. Also notice that this yellow navigation buttons move from your right side with the screen, to the site the bottom when we get closer into a mobile resolution. I really like howthe Captivate team implemented this functionality!
There s the one thing toPreview a project inside your desktop browser and utilize slider to obtain a sense for a way it will look across multiple screens, and there s the power toactually preview your learningon these devices itself. There s something pretty special once you starting planning on mobile and you'll be able to actually touch your work over a smartphone or tablet, this also is where Adobe Edge Inspect also comes in.
The tight integration the Captivate team has produced with Edge inspect is amazing. Once you might have installed Edge Inspect on the devices, you may preview a project in Captivate 8 plus the browser itself will be sending the preview to each of your devices, providing they are about the same wifi network and voila you're now testing work directly with your mobile device. You can even initiatea screen capture session from the desktop browser and it is going to take screen shots from all of your devices, this really is great for sharing along with your team throughout development. I will record a how-to video later and post here on my small blog.
Geolocation is really a nice feature in Captivate 8 which uses the location-based feature on cellular phones to pinpoint the place a learner might be inside the world. Thiscould be familiar with provide personalized learning dependant on where learners are placed at the time he / she takes the training. I believe this isa good start toward benefiting from all the sensor superpowers inherent in cellular phones, for learning. I expect geolocation being the beginning of Adobe adding other similar features just like the microphone and camera to augmentthe learning experience.
I m also really impressed with all the brand new learning interactions in Captivate 8, which during my testing, many of them are responsive and work towards mobile okay. I m especially astounded by the one called Catch AlphaNums, which is usually a game-based interaction that can full advantage on the mobile device s accelerometer to be able to tilt these devices forplaying the experience. The best way to understand this is always to watch the video below, where Adobe s Dr. Pooja addresses the implementation in this interaction and later on uses an iPad to indicate the accelerometer in working order. This is definitely an excellent utilization of another sensor superpower inherent in mobile phones.
This is surely an impressive update to your screen capturing engine in Adobe Captivate that had been much needed, so that you can provide an optimal experience for mobile users watching a screen cast.Adobe Captivate will basically detect screen activity from the recording window and automatically pans aroundthose areas to be able to create screen capture that's optimizedfor today and smartphone.
I m glad to determine the Captivate team embracing HTML5 because future ofthe web. This is why I m impressed with the capacity to import HTML5 objects inside Captivate 8. Adobe incorporates a product called Edge Animate that lets you create animation in native HTML5 format, that you can then import into the mobile learning projects in Captivate 8, using the Media drop-down menu, as illustrated below.
I realize this can be not a mobile learning feature per se, neither is that this knew in version 8, but I do such as the idea of renting Captivate 8 for ongoing mobile learning projects and also by now it ought to also be clear that cloud-based subscription are the desolate man software. Adobe may be quite successful achieving this since launching Adobe Creative Cloud. Other companies like Microsoft perform the same thing with Office and I would suspect soon others will abide by suit.
There s no such thing to be a perfect software and I m sure there are flaws in Captivate 8, too. HoweverI believe you will need to choose software based around the vision behind the business driving the product or service, even though I wasn t impressed with versions 6 and 7, I do believe Captivate 8 is preciselythe version I have already been waiting for the long time for designing m-Learning that will work across multiple personal computers, tablets and smartphones.
Since leaving Adobe, I are already ofthe biggest critics of Adobe Captivate, namely because I wanted theteam to treat important industry web trends, for example mobile learning and responsive website development.
Today I m pleased to say that my faith inside Adobe Captivate team has become restored, and I m eager for working using the team sufficient reason for Captivate users, in order to help move this device forward, especially as increasing numbers of instructional designers and managers still look for solutions to mobilize their learning.
In closing I d wish to congratulate my old team for any job well done, and encourage everyone considering designing mobile studying to download the trial and take it for any responsive spin.
Hi, i am RJ Jacquez and I help learning organizations and people mobilize their learning and make up a successful transition from e-Learning to Mobile Learning m-Learning. I teach a monthly workshop online on how-to create Mobile Learning. Im a Blogger here, blogging the Mobile Learning Revolution as it happens. Please follow me on Twitter rjacquez What is the way forward for mLearning Design? Storyline s native app vs. Captivate s Responsive Design Poll
Glad to determine you back posting again! I have already been using Captivate 8 daily for your past 5 months. It is really a phenomenal release, very stable and plenty of small improvements that equal to big time-savers SmartShape buttons is my personal favorite. However, I caution everyone about using Responsive Projects unless:
a. They truly is going to be designing their content to show up and act differently depending around the device, and
b. They are happy to work through a lot of issues, gotchas, and limitations.
As in mere about every Captivate release, any time a big feature is first unveiled it is usually a very risky thing to use for production purposes.
99% in the e-learning that individuals are developing today is more preferable served up by using a Standard Project, published to HTML5 together with the Scalable HTML5 option selected.
I agree the longer term is the Responsive Project and am looking forward on the next release to find out improvements in that area, but unless that you are going to make distinct changes for a content, larger buttons for mobile versus desktop breakpoints, or maybe even omitting some portions on the course to the mobile version and going with a checklists/job-aid/resources approach, etc., then it is more preferable to stick to HTML5 standard project for me.
Also, additional opinions based on my own experience using the services of Cp8:
a. Mobile gestures are certainly not practically useful unless that you are publishing a strict page-turner/linear-navigation scheme. This is atypical. Also, the gestures are typically or nothing you are able to t enable pinch to zoom without enabling each of the s a showstopper in my opinion.
b. The Learning Interactions are extremely poorly designed, aesthetically, that I am very reluctant to ever utilize them. At least colors, fonts, etc. is usually modified, but in spite of that they're still quite ugly and mismatched unless someone is utilizing the stock themes which might be also hideous.
c. Edge Inspect integration is actually iffy still. It often doesn t work, or fails. It s so unreliable that I among others have abadndoned it.
d. On a positive note the external HTML5 integration/support is phenomenally good. Being able to import an outside HTML5 project or an file works fabulously well knowning that alone makes Captivate 8 a major step forward personally.
Hi Mark, appreciate your reading and commenting, I appreciate that! Thank for sharing your knowledge about Captivate 8. Regarding your comment 99% from the e-learning that men and women are developing today is way better served up by using a Standard Project I actually imagine that we should start doing more than just creating exactly the same ol e-learning and therefore my excitement about Responsive Projects. We have to take mobile learning serious and therefore far there hasn t been a practical tool to make this happen until now. It s ok to function with lots of issues, gotchas, and limitations while you mentioned, so long when we are pushing the enveloping with this learning design. The worst thing we are able to do as a possible industry is always to keep producing the ditto, convinced that our learners aren t ready for mobile, they're! We ought to take some steps in order to meet them nearly. This is why I believe every Captivate customer should step out in their comfort zone and test out Responsive Projects, they've already nothing to lose and plenty to gain. This will be the future and also the sooner we embrace it, the greater off we are going to be.
I agree that we must innovate in terms of e-learning design. But currently, the HTML5 output in Captivate 8.1 is just not good enough to reliably run even simple projects, significantly less ones that push the envelope. Simple interactions clickboxes lag or perhaps don t work in any respect. Audio gets away from sync or takes 2-3 seconds to experiment with after the slide changes. These are not just little issues, gotchas or limitations. They ruin an individual experience a whole lot that I wind up giving up on interactions and easily publishing to YouTube 4.
Thanks RJ to the review! I share up your eyes about each of the advantages relevant to responsive design and HTML5 when talking about m-Learning and I m currently discovering these interesting Captivate 8 features.
But why not consider offline capabilities? Connections and bandwidth issues are typical when learning mobile. My personal user experience like a mobile learner is the fact that an m-learning content should invariably be usable in offline mode at the same time. Mobile apps manage to better manage offline capabilities than HTML5 are capable of doing right now witth AppCache. It could well be really great to own your thoughts that. Thanks again!
Hi Didier, thank you for stopping by and I m glad to hear you might be using Captivate 8. I hear you within the offline capabilities even though Captivate doesn t yet have these, I m sure the Captivate teams is already planning on it. Like I said during my review, the m-Learning features in Captivate 8 are the ideal start plus it sets the muse for many circumstances to come, so stay tuned for more. Also, good point on today s mobile apps, but I still think that using the web is often a better procedure for deliver mobile learning experiences vs. native apps. I m already working with a follow-up post where I will talk more details on this.
Sorry to pop in, but you'll be able to create an app right from Captivate, isn t that whatever you mean by offline?
Good point, Lieve. Although I believe Didier was discussing offline capabilities via Responsive projects. Thanks for stopping by and I hope you're well, Lieve!
Publish to a app is possible from the responsive project.
Hi Lieve, by offline I did not mean to write the content for an app. In the project I am focusing on we do not should make an app install like a prerequisite for accessing this content. We want it to get usable with no installation.
Thanks, RJ, on your review. I agree with everything you wrote. The more I use Captivate 8 s responsive design features, a lot more I love it. The one quibble I have is the fact the mobile gestures needs to be individually selectable as an alternative to all or free. The reason is the fact that I would normally not need the swipe option as my learning has never been linear but is normally case-based scenarios with a lot of branching. Other than that, yep, it s an excellent offering!
I appreciate that, Joe. I hadn t thought in regards to the gestures bit so far, but you've got a good point. Anyhow, as I said around my review, my faith in Adobe and Captivate is restored and I m excited to be capable of recommend Captivate to my customers plus the world. Happy belated New Year!
Great article. I landed upon it when using a search regarding using right clicks an iPad via captivate development. Has this been resolved in CP8? I haven t had the opportunity to crack this blog yet.
Thanks RJ really enjoyed your article.
What are your ideas on using Adobe Edge to generate an elearning course separate from combining it with Adobe Captivate? Does Edge have major limitations so that it is so that wouldn t become a reliable experience for that user? I have read advantages of Edge, but it's always in conjuction with using Captivate.
Hi Melissa, glad to listen for you enjoyed reading this post. I really like tools like Adobe Edge that promote the adoption of HTML5, and even though it could be possible to building learning from it, I think it could simply be too difficult. I think it lacks many in the functionality that's needed for creating viable learning, like quizzes and interactions that promote learning, plus integration with Learning Management Systems, etc. I would actually recommend using Adobe Edge along with Adobe Captivate 8, especially through the use from the new Responsive Projects. Thanks again!
Yes Adobe Edge Animate seems to get really great to generate very nice animations which might be imported and combined with Captivate 8. I ve already tried and it also works great in responsive projects.
I enjoyed your notions. Thank you a lot!
As an eLearning/Video and Motion Graphics Designer to get a huge restaurant chain, we're currently from the process when attemping to choose either Captivate or Articulate.
Me, I have and try to have been an Adobe fan. When individuals were using Final Cut and Avid, I always kept my faith in Premiere/AE. Like Captivate, it came full circle.
Captivate experienced some rough times v5, 6, but I see more future potential inside new Captivate 8, above all else out there. The fact that the workflow between each of the Adobe products is there causes it to be even more inviting.
I loved Flash, but know it will not be suitable for eLearning anymore so Edge Animate can be a great addition for animations coupled with Captivate also.
This was a terrific article that I sent onto my manager to examine, thanks with the input!
Thank you for granting my desire in several months ago. Great review!
i should do a simulation in captivate, on the other hand cant save it as being a swf file
seeing that flash does not focus on tablets, perhaps there is something else
i are capable of doing? plainly publish to html5 will this work
IF YOU ARE CONSIDERING PURCHASING CAPTIVATE TO BUILD COURSES. DONT!
I have discovered so many issues using captivate to develop courses. For starters, should you buy lets say Captivate 8, did you know adobe wont always update Captivate 8 when Captivate 9 arrives, even though you purchase Captivate 8 below 90 days ago. If you purchase any version of captivate as soon since the next version releases you might NEVER get another update on that version of captivate again. Which could be critical if your browser like Chrome changes operate reads HTML5 coding, you might be stuck while using old version that doesnt make an appearance properly inside new released browsers since captivate doesnt update the previous versions. Basically Adobe can never update any version they've made including their previous version when they released a more moderen version. THINK TWICE BEFORE BUYING CAPTIVATE! OR BE PREPARED TO SPEND HUNDREDS OF DOLLARS TO KEEP UPGRADING TO EACH NEW VERSION TO GET UPDATES!

I actually believe Adobe, by embracing Responsive Design principles in Captivate 8,goes in a better mobile learning direction, as it helps users design flexible and fluid m-Learning, which can be consumed on desktops, tablets and smartphones, without resorting to installing an additional app.
If that you are new to Responsive Design, it isn t necessarily just one technology you could point to, but instead a pair of principles aided by a number of HTML5 technologies like CSS media queries, fluid grids and flexible images and videos.
In the first days of mobile, a lot of companies tried to meet the needs of their mobile users by creating two versions of these website, one for desktop users and also a lighter, less powerful mobile version for users visiting their site utilizing a mobile device. This approach quickly becamea nightmare due to need to maintain two groups of code, along with the inability to predict where people will be coming from, and for that reason often times desktop users would arrive around the mobile version and mobile users would land around the desktop version with the site, making a complete mess.
Luckily more plus much more companies have become re-building their websites by using a Mobile-first mentality plus a Responsive Design approach.
With Responsive Design, the theory is to maintain and point people to one particular URL, usinga single list of content about the back end, with the same code, and through the help of CSS Media Queries, deliver great experiences across multiple devices, including desktop and laptops, tablets and smartphones and within the near future, wearables just like the iWatch and Google Glass.
This is just how we should comprehend the future of learning design and consumption, we ought to focus on designing learning that may be flexible and fluid across multiple screens; intelligent learning, that tend to points learners to one particular URL, and prevent at all causethe need forinstalling different native apps for several mobile systems, to enable learners to gain access to the learning.
Just since the web community has embraced the One Web philosophy, we too should embrace a One Learning design paradigm.
And because of this , in my humble opinion, the way forward for mobile learning design looks brighter for Adobe, and I see Captivate 8 asa great first steptoward this vision. With Captivate 8, Adobe commoditizes the roll-out of best-in-class mobile learning, while not having to know much concerning the technology behind the scenes, and also to me this is really a game-changer inthe transition from e-Learning to m-Learning!
Having stated that, allow me to share 10 things Adobe gets right about Mobile Learning with Captivate 8 :
When I worked at Adobe, another thing I always have been told by newcomers to Captivate was it was difficult to acquire started, with the lack of templates. This is why I really such as new splash screen you will get when you launch Captivate 8. You now have selections for starting a blank project, a project based onyour own project template or from your PowerPointfile, coming from a software simulation, a movie demo not to mention now for designing aResponsive project.
I feel so strongly about Responsive Design being the desolate man learning design, that I would recommend youto get started with a Responsive Project even when initially you possibly will not be contemplating mobile learning.
When you choose to focus on a Responsive Project, you automatically get three layouts, namely one with the desktop 1024px, another one with the tablet 768px and also a one for that smartphone 360px. All three of these options could be adjusted in case you want to a target your learning to your differentscreen resolution.
I think this is often a good start, but I d enjoy seeing more flexibility with regards to adding more breakpoints, and also options for when learners rotate their screen. One thing that is certainly obvious in my experience, mind you, these resolutions are organized from left to right is the fact that Adobe isthinking desktop-first, tablet-second and mobile-last. I m a mobile-first advocate so I might have put Mobile first, Tablet second and Desktop last. But again, this is usually a terrific way to have learning professionals considering m-Learning, so kudos to Adobe !
If your design necessitates absolute dimensions, you might have already failed!
Smart multi-device design ought to be fluid inside the way water is, whatever container you place water into, water becomes that container. This is why I m looking forward to being able to decide on a percentage value when defining the dimensions and placement of objects within the properties tab in Adobe Captivate 8. As I wrote above around the three primary elements of responsive design, flexible images is vital and by sizing and positioning images using percentage values, that you are able to include images that could work everywhere byadjusting their size and position based on whatever devices is employed by learner.
For long now we have already been designing learning with the precision with the connected mouse and keyboard, however, touch computing turns this paradigm on its head, so we now must design for your not-so precise finger or even more accurately, for your ergonomics on the thumbs. Luckily Captivate 8 causes it to become a breeze to ensure learners can navigate the educational using touch gestures like taps and swipes. Enabling this feature will make sure that learners doesn't only be able to makes use of the mouse within the desktop and easy, make use of the fingers on cellular phones, that is exactly how it ought to be.
As at your job Responsive Projects, you'll want to preview them inside your default browser and here s something you might really enjoy in Captivate 8, there s a slider it is possible to drag left and right to have a previewof what sort of various break points is fine across multiple devices with some other physical sizes and resolutions.
Here s a rapid animation showing approach, notice how objects flow over the width on the screendepending about the resolution, especially as I move the slider on the right. Also notice the way the yellow navigation buttons move on the right side in the screen, up to the bottom even as we get closer to your mobile resolution. I really like howthe Captivate team implemented this functionality!
There s another thing toPreview a project inside your desktop browser and make use of the slider to have a sense for a way it will look across multiple screens, and after that there s the power toactually preview your learningon these devices itself. There s something pretty special if you starting thinking of mobile and you are able to actually touch your work using a smartphone or tablet, this also is where Adobe Edge Inspect will come in.
The tight integration the Captivate team has generated with Edge inspect is amazing. Once you might have installed Edge Inspect with your devices, you are able to preview a project in Captivate 8 as well as the browser itself will point the preview to each of your devices, as long as they are around the same wifi network and voila that you are now testing work directly in your mobile device. You can even initiatea screen capture session from the desktop browser and it is going to take screen shots all your devices, that is great for sharing along with your team throughout development. I will record a how-to video later and post here on my own blog.
Geolocation can be a nice feature in Captivate 8 using the location-based feature on cellular devices to pinpoint the place a learner might be inside the world. Thiscould be utilized to provide personalized learning determined by where learners are placed at the time they takes the training. I believe this isa good start toward using all the sensor superpowers inherent in cellular phones, for learning. I expect geolocation being the beginning of Adobe adding other similar features just like the microphone and camera to augmentthe learning experience.
I m also really impressed with all the revolutionary learning interactions in Captivate 8, which during my testing, a lot of them are responsive and work with mobile okay. I m especially stunned at the one called Catch AlphaNums, which is really a game-based interaction that may full advantage in the mobile device s accelerometer to be able to tilt it forplaying the overall game. The best way to understand this is usually to watch the video below, where Adobe s Dr. Pooja explains the implementation on this interaction and later on uses an iPad to indicate the accelerometer in working order. This is undoubtedly an excellent usage of another sensor superpower inherent in cellular devices.
This can be an impressive update to your screen capturing engine in Adobe Captivate that had been much needed, to be able to provide an optimal experience for mobile users watching a screen cast. Adobe Captivate will basically detect screen activity inside the recording window and automatically pans aroundthose areas so that you can create screen capture that may be optimizedfor today and smartphone.
I m glad to discover the Captivate team embracing HTML5 because future ofthe web. This is why I m impressed with the capability to import HTML5 objects right into Captivate 8. Adobe incorporates a product called Edge Animate that permits you to create animation in native HTML5 format, that you can then import in your mobile learning projects in Captivate 8, using the Media drop-down menu, as illustrated below.
I realize it is not a mobile learning feature per se, neither is this fact knew in version 8, but I do just like the idea of renting Captivate 8 for ongoing mobile learning projects through now it ought to also be clear that cloud-based subscription are the way forward for software. Adobe continues to be quite successful repeating this since launching Adobe Creative Cloud. Other companies like Microsoft perform the same thing with Office and I would suspect soon others will observe suit.
There s no such thing like a perfect software and I m sure there are flaws in Captivate 8, too. HoweverI believe you will need to choose software based for the vision behind the business driving this product, and although I wasn t impressed with versions 6 and 7, I do believe Captivate 8 is preciselythe version I happen to be waiting to get a long time for designing m-Learning that will work across multiple personal computers, tablets and smartphones.
Since leaving Adobe, I happen to be ofthe biggest critics of Adobe Captivate, namely because I wanted theteam to handle important industry web trends, for example mobile learning and responsive web site design.
Today I m thrilled to say that my faith inside Adobe Captivate team may be restored, and I m awaiting working together with the team sufficient reason for Captivate users, in order to help move this system forward, especially weight loss instructional designers and managers keep look for strategies to mobilize their learning.
In closing I d wish to congratulate my old team for any job well done, and encourage everyone enthusiastic about designing mobile understanding how to download the trial and take it for just a responsive spin.

Glad to discover you back posting again! I have already been using Captivate 8 daily for that past 5 months. It can be a phenomenal release, very stable and several small improvements that total big time-savers SmartShape buttons is one of the best. However, I caution everyone about using Responsive Projects unless:
a. They truly is going to be designing their content to show up and act differently depending within the device, and
b. They are ready to work through plenty of issues, gotchas, and limitations.
As in mere about every Captivate release, whenever a big feature is first unveiled it is sometimes a very risky thing to use for production purposes.
99% in the e-learning that men and women are developing today is way better served up using a Standard Project, published to HTML5 together with the Scalable HTML5 option selected.
I agree the long run is the Responsive Project and am looking forward towards the next release to find out improvements in that area, but unless you happen to be going to make distinct changes on your content, larger buttons for mobile versus desktop breakpoints, or possibly even omitting some portions from the course to the mobile version and merely going with a checklists/job-aid/resources approach, etc., then it is way better to stay with HTML5 standard project for me.
Also, additional opinions based on my own experience dealing with Cp8:
a. Mobile gestures usually are not practically useful unless you're publishing a strict page-turner/linear-navigation scheme. This is atypical. Also, the gestures are typical or nothing it is possible to t enable pinch to zoom without enabling the many s a showstopper for me personally.
b. The Learning Interactions are very poorly designed, aesthetically, that I am very unwilling to ever rely on them. At least colors, fonts, etc. may be modified, but despite that these are still quite ugly and mismatched unless someone is employing the stock themes which might be also hideous.
c. Edge Inspect integration is actually comparatively iffy still. It often doesn t work, or fails. It s so unreliable that I as well as others have abadndoned it.
d. On a positive note the external HTML5 integration/support is phenomenally good. Being able to import an outside HTML5 project or an file works fabulously well and this alone makes Captivate 8 a huge step forward to me.
Hi Mark, appreciate your reading and commenting, I appreciate that! Thank for sharing your knowledge about Captivate 8. Regarding your comment 99% in the e-learning that individuals are developing today is more preferable served up using a Standard Project I actually believe we should start doing more than merely creating precisely the same ol e-learning therefore my excitement about Responsive Projects. We have to take mobile learning serious and therefore far there hasn t been a practical tool to achieve this until now. It s ok to function with lots of issues, gotchas, and limitations while you mentioned, so long once we are pushing the enveloping with this learning design. The worst thing you can do for an industry is always to keep producing the same, convinced that our learners aren t ready for mobile, they can be! We should take some steps in order to meet them nearly. This is why I believe every Captivate customer should step out with their comfort zone and experience Responsive Projects, they've nothing to lose and much to gain. This will be the future as well as the sooner we embrace it, the higher off we are going to be.
I agree that we must innovate on the subject of e-learning design. But currently, the HTML5 output in Captivate 8.1 isn't good enough to reliably run even simple projects, a lot less ones that push the envelope. Simple interactions clickboxes lag or merely don t work in any respect. Audio gets away from sync or takes 2-3 seconds to try out after the slide changes. These are not only little issues, gotchas or limitations. They ruin an individual experience much that I turn out giving up on interactions and publishing to YouTube 4.
Thanks RJ for the review! I share up your eyes about the many advantages associated with responsive design and HTML5 when talking about m-Learning and I m currently discovering these interesting Captivate 8 features.
But why not consider offline capabilities? Connections and bandwidth issues are normal when learning mobile. My personal user experience being a mobile learner is the fact that an m-learning content should invariably be usable in offline mode likewise. Mobile apps apparently better manage offline capabilities than HTML5 can perform right now witth AppCache. It can be really great to get your thoughts with that. Thanks again!
Hi Didier, appreciate your stopping by and I m glad to hear you might be using Captivate 8. I hear you about the offline capabilities and even though Captivate doesn t yet have these, I m sure the Captivate teams is already thinking of it. Like I said during my review, the m-Learning features in Captivate 8 are a good start also it sets the cornerstone for many what you should come, so keep tuned in. Also, good point on today s mobile apps, but I still think that using the web is really a better method of deliver mobile learning experiences vs. native apps. I m already working over a follow-up post where I will talk much more about this.
Sorry to pop in, but you may create an app from Captivate, isn t that whatever you mean by offline?
Good point, Lieve. Although I feel that Didier was discussing offline capabilities via Responsive projects. Thanks for stopping by and I hope you happen to be well, Lieve!
Publish to a app is possible at a responsive project.
Hi Lieve, by offline I did not mean to write the content for an app. In the project I am focusing on we do not need to make an app install being a prerequisite for accessing this content. We want it being usable with no installation.
Thanks, RJ, for the review. I agree with everything you wrote. The more I use Captivate 8 s responsive design features, greater I love it. The one quibble I have is the mobile gestures really should be individually selectable as an alternative to all reely. The reason is the fact I would normally n't want the swipe option as my learning is never linear but is frequently case-based scenarios with a lot of branching. Other than that, yep, it s an excellent offering!
I appreciate that, Joe. I hadn t thought concerning the gestures bit until recently, but you could have a good point. Anyhow, as I said within my review, my faith in Adobe and Captivate may be restored and I m excited to be capable of recommend Captivate to my customers and also the world. Happy belated New Year!
Great article. I landed upon it with a search regarding using right trys to follow an iPad via captivate development. Has this been resolved in CP8? I haven t had the capacity to crack this yet.
Thanks RJ really enjoyed your article.
What are your opinions on using Adobe Edge to build an elearning course outside of combining it with Adobe Captivate? Does Edge have major limitations turning it into so that wouldn t become a reliable experience for that user? I have read primary advantages of Edge, yet it's always in conjuction with using Captivate.
Hi Melissa, glad to listen for you enjoyed reading this post. I really like tools like Adobe Edge that promote the adoption of HTML5, even though it could be possible to building learning along with it, I think it might be too difficult. I think it lacks many with the functionality that is certainly needed for creating viable learning, like quizzes and interactions that promote learning, plus integration with Learning Management Systems, etc. I would actually recommend using Adobe Edge along with Adobe Captivate 8, especially through the use from the new Responsive Projects. Thanks again!
Yes Adobe Edge Animate seems to become really great to build very nice animations which might be imported and used in combination with Captivate 8. I ve already tried plus it works great in responsive projects.
I enjoyed your notions. Thank you much!
As an eLearning/Video and Motion Graphics Designer for just a huge restaurant chain, we're also currently from the process when you attempt to choose either Captivate or Articulate.
Me, I have and also have been an Adobe fan. When citizens were using Final Cut and Avid, I always kept my faith in Premiere/AE. Like Captivate, it came full circle.
Captivate had some rough times v5, 6, but I see more future potential within the new Captivate 8, most importantly out there. The fact that the workflow between the many Adobe products is there causes it to be even more inviting.
I loved Flash, but know it isn't suitable for eLearning anymore so Edge Animate could be a great addition for animations coupled with Captivate also.
This was an incredible article that I sent up to my manager to examine, thanks to the input!
Thank you for granting my desire in several months ago. Great review!
i ought to do a simulation in captivate, however cant save it being a swf file
seeing that flash does not work towards tablets, perhaps there is something else
i are capable of doing? basically publish to html5 will this work
IF YOU ARE CONSIDERING PURCHASING CAPTIVATE TO BUILD COURSES. DONT!
I have discovered so many issues using captivate to make courses. For starters, if you buy lets say Captivate 8, do you know adobe wont always update Captivate 8 when Captivate 9 is released, even when you purchase Captivate 8 under 90 days ago. If you purchase any version of captivate as soon as being the next version releases you may NEVER get another update on that version of captivate again. Which could be critical if your browser like Chrome changes operate reads HTML5 coding, you happen to be stuck with all the old version that doesnt make an appearance properly inside new released browsers since captivate doesnt update the earlier versions. Basically Adobe will not update any version they have got made including their previous version when they released a more recent version. THINK TWICE BEFORE BUYING CAPTIVATE ! OR BE PREPARED TO SPEND HUNDREDS OF DOLLARS TO KEEP UPGRADING TO EACH NEW VERSION TO GET UPDATES!
