Weve written quite a lot about the conundrum of writing requirements within an agile environment. The most important takeaway is: the obvious way to kick-off your software projects is to create a shared understanding amongst your team. At Atlassian we find the easiest method to do this is usually to create a collaborative product requirement to hash out details for big complex epics. When your requirement doc is produced and the data is all area, commemorate it much easier for Development and Design to offer immediate feedback and input. When this happens it is possible to iterate quickly and implement work immediately. Heres how you'll be able to create that requirement and make a shared understanding in Confluence :
Get started while using special template that weve included. The template might help point you within the right direction, and offer some suggestions for what content to feature.
Your requirements page may be laser focused using a particular feature, or it would include requirements for just a release that features multiple features. Either way, you must capture key higher level details for the top from the page for convenient reference.
Participants: Who is involved? Use mentions to feature the product owner, along with other stakeholder s.
Status: Whats the existing state from the program? Use the s tatus macro to quickly show when you on target, vulnerable, delayed, deferred, etc.
Target release: When would it be projected to ship? If you use JIRA, hyperlink to your JIRA project.
When you you could make your first product requirement doc in Confluence youll see the project details are inside a table located inside a page properties panel. The page properties macro is usually a powerful macro that permits you tocreate an overview page that pulls in information from multiple pages. In this case, an understanding page could generate each from the fields within your table so you may see who's going to be involved or status of the given requirements page. Keep reading to view what that summary page looks like
The team goals and business objectives section is meant to provide a chance to start being active . color and context in your requirement.
A simple method to think about your goals originates from your customers perspective. What exactly are they attempting to achieve? How does the perfect solution is youre proposing go with it?
Use a table to read your user stories, in addition to description, priority, and notes. This table is the one other great place to connect to more detailed research pages, and customer interviews.
Its not thay hard to turn an individual stories you are writing in Confluence into JIRA issues. When the page is saved, just highlight anyone story text, and Confluence offers you the option to make JIRA issues. If you then have a full table filled with user stories, it is possible to convert all into JIRA issues at a time.
Drag-and-drop design files to embed them in your page. If youre embedding multiple design assets utilize attachments macro to build a quick repository of every one of the files that happen to be attached on the page.
Confluence is ideal for collaborating on wireframes, mockups, and design prototypes. Use the rich file viewer to prievew PDFs, images, and powerpoint presentations. You can pin comments right on files to supply feedback in context. Your design, and dev team can spar on early mockups on a single page.
As the group understands the difficulties to solve, sometimes they have questions. Create a table of things we must decide or research to monitor these items.
Keep the team devoted to the work available by clearly calling out what you aren't doing. Flag things which might be out of scope with the moment, but could be looked at later.
Most likely you and/or your team spend time in JIRA. Its really easy to obtain from your Confluence requirement for a JIRA epic and or viceversa. You can view each of the JIRA links on any Confluence page, by exploring the JIRA links button in the top of your saved page.
Youre that's doubtful just working away at one project. Confluence automatically creates an index page that pulls inside the key details of your complete teams product requirements. You can always access this index page inside Space sidebar.
ts an opportune way to determine what your team is or continues to be working on at a dangerous. Just like any page in Confluence you'll be able to edit this index page while you see fit.
You can edit the Product Requirements blueprint whenever you want and tailor it to suit your teams specific needs. If you wish to edit the template for the specific team or project, go towards the Space Tools menu and select Content Tools. Under the Templates option you are able to view and edit any with the templates included. If youre a web site admin you are able to also edit the worldwide template to customzie it company-wide.
The factor to agile requirements is buidling a shared understanding amongst your team. The best way to do that is creating your advanced requirements doc in Confluence, and collaborating across development and design on crucial issues. Use our template like a guide, and customize it to match your team or companys workflow.
Product Requirements Blueprint: It does most from the work for you. Follow the page outline, and fill content that creates sense for ones specific requirement.
Page properties macro: This macro makes it possible to make a reporting page across your complete requirements. When with all the blueprint will probably be included on your own page.
Product Requirements index: Once youve created several requirements pages, it is possible to see every one of the high level details in a glance with an index page that Confluence automatically creates when you utilize blueprint.
File comments: Add your design files on the page and encourage discussion to them with pinned comments.
JIRA links: Just look inside page header to view all the JIRA issues which can be included from the requirement.
Customizing Blueprints: You can edit any from the blueprints that can included in Confluence to suit your specific workflow.

This past Thursday, September 24th, 2015, I presented a few prototypes of the I hope is definitely the future with the Jenkins GUI. Or perhaps more correctly, close enough to your future to get started on generating positive feedback from you town that enhancing the Jenkins GUI is vital and some pieces that I am showing are going inside right direction. If you've got 45 minutes to spare, I recommend the playback quality the narrators voice is quite soothing. If not, I provide the following like a reasonable summary.
Jenkins carries a lot of strengths as tool. Its robust user community as well as its thoughtful and extensible design are two with the most immediate. They are definitely the two pillars which have renedered Jenkins the leader inside CD/CI space and also the de facto choice for almost all of us seeking to automate our build and test processes. But let's admit it, by todays standards, the GUI doesnt really sing. I will even go in terms of to say, I believe it can be a platform liability on the moment, and in many cases among we the Jenkins faithful, not many of us look forward to getting it.
In an effort to convert that tide, I traveled to the years 3 main JUC events, in DC, London, and Santa Clara, pushing the concept enhancement is quite possible and providing an evolving sketch of the that might resemble. The three main regions of enhancement I have targeted for the first round of improvement are these:
Soon to adhere to, although not yet prototyped by me could be pieces focused on monitoring jobs in Jenkins and also node and resource utilization and efficiency. Rightly or wrongly, I have started using the create and configure side in the GUI, as I view it as somewhat primary in a very typical job creation scenario you've got to develop a job before you'll be able to monitor it, but this second piece isn't any less important. Sadly, lips service is all I can present you with today, but more prototypes and video demonstrations are on just how.
In most use cases, item creation means setting up a freestyle job, to ensure that is what I use as my base use case example. It is very important to note, however, that almost all configuration in Jenkins happens by having a shared list of GUI components. These components certainly are a blend of Jelly files and Javascript and could be found in /main/resources/lib/form directory from the Jenkins source code. In operating on these pieces, I have the ability to effectively enhance broad areas from the Jenkins experience, including elements of plugin use that share these ingredients. This greatly raises the upside from the effort as well as being the possible drama and uncomfortable side effects, which I go into more detail on later.
As to the upside piece, the initial bit of improvement I am seeking to attain is breaking apart the many tissue papper style unbroken configuration lists sprinkled throughout Jenkins. The first example with this appears in item creation. On first installation, this problem is not immediately obvious, but when you have installed many different plugins or chosen to acquire CloudBees Jenkins Enterprise product, you'll find that Jenkins may have quite a number of types of items to generate. While they totally have descriptive text, I still locate them difficult to differentiate and extremely difficult to casually scan. Thus, my first suggestion should be to add some sort of categorization on the item types. For this to operate correctly, the GUI will need to become smart enough to use the categories only if item counts are sufficient to justify them in the event you only have 4 item creation types, it doesnt make sense to own 8 categories in which to sort them. But if you certainly are a long time Jenkins user with lots of plugins you can even know it may be possible to have greater than a dozen item types. So if very little else, extra time point that allowed for your categorization of item types seems helpful.
The configuration form itself, in addition, it can become incredibly long with few landmarks or visual differentiation points. As a remedy, I propose calling out and clearly boxing each from the existing configuration sections and ensuring that their names are as meaningful as you can. As an added step, I have the sections collapsible. This allows anyone to jump to specific points inside the form and tuck other locations out in the way. In some cases, you can make specific sections open by link context and even by user context.
Another essential piece from the Jenkins experience is plugin configuration. Today, in case you are aiming to add plugins for your Jenkins environment, you're almost certainly using Google to discover a 3rd party website, collecting the name with the plugin you want after which either linking for it on this amazing site, or filtering for it from the Plugin Manager GUI.
Neither within the product nor on this web site is there a particularly good resource for comparing plugins and evaluating that you may possibly add.
Instead, I am aiming to add something similar to an application store experience to both this website along with the product UI. You should be competent to group sort and compare plugins using a variety of criteria, including author, installation base, and user review. You should also have a number of general use categories that suits user needs and expectations, as opposed to the free ranging labels that plugin authors have arbitrarily applied today.
Finally, I use a GUI that allows for just a sort of Drag-n-drop assembly of Workflows. A major tenant from the utility of Workflows rather than Freestyle jobs is the fact that they is usually completely separated in the Jenkins GUI and stored within a source repository. None-the-less, with zero GUI, there is little change to guide the user who's going to be looking to acquire started without having a upfront learning investment. As it turns out, a Workflow/Groovy script is actually comparatively straight forward, and you dont actually know that until you've got made one. Also, Workflow allows for your orchestration of jobs across multiple nodes of hardware resources, which makes it a potentially involved little dose of configuration. Thus, come about here is two parts. Allow an individual to model a workflow quickly and showcase a few from the more advanced features workflow enables. The result is this script builder. My hope should be to host the prototype somewhere you all may be able to utilize it directly, but inside meantime, my hope is the fact my video pretty much explains the ins and outs. Please look and post whatever comments you think acceptable.
So with things community related, please, please, send back whatever feedback is practical. I is usually reached via Twitter gusreiber.
How likely do any of these UI changes can certainly make it to the core open source Jenkins? When would we start seeing them there?
Most is going to be OSS. An exact schedule will never be determined, but many of it remains to be about a year away. Likely we'll have an experimental wars for download along just how.
Is there anyway to determine which GUI attributes are contributed through which plugin?
I bring it that is really a bit of any feature request? It showed up at JUC West also. Should be something that is usually surfaced inside GUI. I agree, it will be helpful.
What will be the difference between ANT and Jenkins?
Ant is often a good little more bare-bones than Jenkins. In fact, you are able to add an Ant plugin for your Jenkins environment. You would typically use Ant to compile java source files. Jenkins orchestrates the fetching in the source files from some particular repository, the dwelling of those files often Jenkins uses Ant via its plugin to do that, running and reporting some suite of tests against that build, and after that archiving or deploying the artifacts to wherever. Often times this involves navigating several computers using own security constraints, so Jenkins can help you manage that too.
This isnt on the market, but I am building against 1.621-SNAPSHOT currently, and often will upgrade with Jenkins to your coming December LTS. Im enthusiastic about seeing their list of 100 plugins that you just mentioned by Daniel? Me too.: He and the neighborhood which is usually you if wish to join IRC /jenkins and attend the hangouts and governance meetings:
For IRC, I assume the server is?
Will there be any dashboard form of feature with the build history from the new GUI?
So far, I are actually focusing about the create and configuration portion with the Jenkins UX as I see it as being a barrier to entry for brand new users. The read/report/analyze half in the Jenkins UX I actually see because portion with a lot more long term value, while you tend to study more often than you are submitting, so I am needing to jump in here as, rolling around in its core today, Jenkins the tool usually me to truly want to find out the world inside same context of flat XML files in folders since it actually persists its configuration data. To really make meaningful dashboards, it needs being possible to query job configurations and build artifacts by the wide pair of criteria that will not be at all related for the folder when the xml file happens to become stored. Also, some from the things you care about inside Jenkins universe are compute resources masters/slaves/exactures. These are also not exactly the same as config files in folders and need for being queryable for their own top class type with the items I am saying using a lot of words is always that I see the config piece being a somewhat more immediate and urgent fix. The broccoli from the meal, if you may. I will want to acquire that out as soon as possible to acquire it out on the way. The reporting piece is really the wine. At the moment, we're giving you Bartles and Jaymes in paper plenty of work is needed there.
Have you investigated Google Polymer as UI components for jenkins UI?
I haven't, and can now. I am actually an amazing google fan-boy in much how a great deal of kids love Apple. I also love Apple being from Seattle, I even love MS. But, for your super near term, were most dedicated to getting JQuery cleanly into core and deprecated. Walk first, is my feeling.
Are there any tutorials on Jenkins workflow?
Jesse Glick or KK are better individuals to ask about that, really. They are also on IRC: /jenkins. Daniel Beck at the same time, can be quite a good person ought to. My little workflow demo is really just fiction. Will there be a Expand All and Collapse All buttons to the accordions in new configure GUI? I would probably inject one otherwise by default Yes. Also, they must be URL controllable in order that they could be set by link or user context easily. Maybe they must also remember whatever you had accessible to tinker your really needs to become right.
What impact does the UI changes don job configuration behind the scenes? Is configuration still held in XML format?
None. The post string stays exactly the same and there after, Jenkins is Jenkins.
Can the create item screen be configurable? At the moment, no, but ideally yes. It is still an enormous hand wave for the moment regarding how those categories are made, managed, and updated. The same categories will need to bubble support when searching to the plugins to assist relate what plugins generate what UI. I am hoping for guidance in the community. How will workflow are part of new UI?
In some respects, the newest configuration page is around enhancing the more common freestyle job instead of workflow. However, the last little my presentation with all the script builder is exclusively about workflow. The plugin manager is concerning plugins, in order that it would connect with both.
How is often a human notified with the wait for approval step on this workflow?
So workflow approval may be done using the web GUI. But for getting real notification, you'd probably program that into the workflow Jenkins incorporates a fairly large number of notification plugins. So you may use Jenkins to trigger email, or SMS, or HipChat, or Slack, or basically whatever. As these plugins are increasingly customized for workflow, you'll get nice and nice workflow syntax for instantiating those actions. When my script builder is adopted, you'd have an amiable button you may drag in the stage plus it would notify you prior for the manual checkpoint.
Custom plugins still supported?
Yes. Though there may be supported and supported. The highest volume of support for any plugin can be a custom DSL for workflow that will make for streamlined syntax in workflow for interacting your plugin via Groovy. But existing plugins have no need for that a higher level support to become used inside a Jenkins fileGroovy script. Instead, the syntax for accessing the plugin is likely to get more complicated. plugins are freestyle specific, whereby, they no longer sound right in workflow. Beck or Jesse Glick are usually better suited to answering this question,
Will there be a noticable difference in performance with docker builds, sonar scanning? From my experience sonar takes 20 mins with jenkins plugin where since it takes 3 mins with maven plugin
Is this times it's taking the GUI to render, or actual build to perform? I am unsure I am following a question exactly, but regardless, I am not well equipped to reply to many queries about performance issues in Jenkins. I know of any fairly major performance issue specifically within the configuration form that I believe is going to be fixed within the new GUI, but that isnt build performance, it really is just form rendering performance.
I just like the graphical configuration. Thanks. The scripting of the complex workflow looked a tad daunting.
Cool. Yeah, my main and first goal is to acquire something out there that may allow folks to quickly sketch and deploy a genuine working workflow that reasonably reflects an 80%ish use case. No GUI can ever be as fully flexible to be a script, but I dont think most of the people need the 95% case to have started to see the benefit of the versionable and robust config extendable.
Will there be any effort to have the UI mobile friendly for your admin on the move?
Absolutely. Especially for the TBD read/reporting end from the UI, but everything new would need to meet a fairly high bar of device responsiveness. Today, the Jenkins GUI isn't really responsive. Which is terrible.
As a plugin developer do I need to vary implementing the ui source from jelly or groovy into a other language/technique or could it be compatible?
So you'll not NEED to differ from whatever you might be doing, except if you've built a plugin GUI containing custom script that either relies upon, , or perhaps the particulars with the existing DOM structure you need to do something inside the client that will need your or some other input to be inside a particular TABLE TR TD DOM traversal believe 2 things 're going to always happen for a faster and faster rate. New plugin authors aren't going to would like to write GUIs in Jelly and, instead use some modern-day client side MVC approaches like Angular, in which the GUI interacts which has a REST api as opposed to being a dom directly rendered from your server. It is really a bit of any different mode of working than Jelly, along with perhaps slightly less direct, but it is often a lot easier to get doc on the way to do things with JQuery, Agile, Handlebars along with the like, than it would be to find doc on Jelly. And the responsiveness and breadth of gestures and controls in Jelly already are terribly behind precisely what is now the main stream of web UI development. So I think plugin builders are, when they arent already, gonna want better tools open to them. I also believe people are getting to gravitate towards workflow or something similar. Since the UI for workflow is foremost a script, creating a GUI for just a plugin that actually works with it may well be a fundamentally different on which the plugin is looking to do So again, new plugins and even upgrading existing plugins to utilize workflow are usually want a brand new technology set, not merely because the current Jenkins GUI has been evolving, but because new plugins will wish to do different and better stuff.
Are there connectors for other source control tools like CVS and Dimensions?
I am uncertain exactly which connector plugins are actually supporting Workflow or how deeply that support goes. Because Jenkins has plugins that provide usage of these SCMs, you'll be able to use workflow to search and fetch those source trees. A greater degree of support for workflow readily available plugins will mean a more elegant workflow syntax for the interaction. At the moment, my GUI script builder remains to be fiction. My plan could well be to add GUI buttons for whatever will be the most popular SCMs and I will endeavour to mask the syntax no matter its clumsiness. way I am constructing initially my prototype, there's already a fairly clear extension point for adding buttons that generate some chunk of Groovy syntax when it can be dragged in to a stage. So I will add your initial set dependant on community feedback and after that the community can continue to feature their own.
What include the compatibility issues existing plugin developers needs being aware of?
For plugins that talk with freestyle jobs, or really most job types that arent workflow, plugin developers should expect the page DOM structure to switch. If i really enjoy seeing, they find they may be busting into some custom script to traverse the DOM that compares 1 setting to a new, that could break. Also, itself incorporates a number of functions inside it that do DOM traversing, like findFollowingTR. In some cases the signatures of these functions ought to change along with the DOM structure they return may additionally change. If a plugin uses what were meant to are already internal functions, they are probably to break. Finally, the page geometry is likely to change. This may seem so superficial and obvious that, who cares, but sometimes changing a column width means an important part of an GUI being hidden or else inaccessible. That ultimately ends up being as critical an escape as any to combat these points of possible breakage, we have been going to get looking to get a handful somewhere within 20 and 100 plugins that we're going to want to check against. We havent made that list yet, not to mention run any tests, to ensure that is really a critical alternative. For the plugin manager changes, I dont see much if any of any braking issue, although I would like to feature additional sorting and display power for the GUI, this means the GUI need more metadata than currently exists, should the plugins desire to take advantage of that new power within the GUI. This wont break things, but plugin authors might wish to go to their plugins and add whatever the brand new bits of metadata become. possibly they will be things like, richer descriptions, better category selections, and perchance icons.
Ive not seen lots of Jenkins but what I had I didnt really get, was awkward for all of the reasons Gus mentioned. This looks brilliant. When can we have now it?
Tom and I, and after this our junior pledge, Keith not actually junior in any respect, just fitter than me, are busily typing as soon as we can and also lobbying town that our vision appears a correct one. We possess a very interesting initial plugin selection GUI that might get this to years final LTS which I failed to demo, that's none-the-less a great step forward for Jenkins. In it's going to be a lot on the JS library bundling that may enable most of the items I have shown in this particular demo. Our hope is the fact with each LTS we'll be competent to push out an extra piece on the GUI puzzle. Likely starting together with the job create and configure GUI, which will be the mid year LTS. I am hoping that the year from now this is how Jenkins looks and acts. the meantime, we have been grappling with just how to push preview releases so people can play by it and send me hate mail.
Is there any solution to test nose of Jenkins plugins? And will that improve too?
A major and almost blocking portion on this work used to become the custom and somewhat broken version of HTMLUnit that was at core, which greatly hampered including libraries aside from Prototype in Jenkins and writing code using those libraries in some kind of testable way. Our new way of rebuilding the Jelly controls which include the foundation in the Jenkins config page as well as in general are shared by all plugins that require to post data back in Jenkins, already possess a testing strategy backed into our design. Those Jelly form controls are extensible in Jenkins today and would remain so. Our hope could well be that any plugin adding custom controls would follow our same design and test pattern we have been building in core. that has been a long answer, even so the short answer YES! Today, building GUI parts to your Jenkins plugin is often a bit of any mystery, where most of the people copy something they saw other people did, hack it, and also the only test is, well. it worked for me personally. That isn't a good as well as a fundamental piece we are aiming to change. a protracted answer and Jasmine would be the specific tools we using.
Whats the estimated rollout date because of this workflow feature?
The workflow feature may be the newest concept I demonstrated, but inside a lot of ways may also function as easiest to ship. As a script generator, exclusively, it could possibly be hosted anywhere, and after that you just paste your generated workflow script in to the whatever existing Jenkins GUI better, submit into the source code. on the moment, it isnt actually by using an official roadmap yet. Assuming the response with it remain positive, I would expect that to switch fairly quickly.

When can I expect the Tutorial for Writing javancss Hudson Plug-In to get continued?
I come with an issue with hudson in the event it tries to checkout source files for just a project from CVS. Lets say Ive a project abc under xyz main directory. I need to look at abc directly, quite a bit less xyz/abc, utilizing a tag TAG1 in CVS. I am not capable of do so. Is there any extra configurations we can easily do to achieve precisely the same? One work around Ive found is usually to have the files tested using other third-party CVS tools and have absolutely hudson utilize these files for any build. But I guess, hudson should be capable to manage each one of these by itself.
Suggestions are warmly welcome.
Hi Manjit, I havent tried considering sub-directories in Hudson but Im I havent tried looking over sub-directories in Hudson but Im pretty sure it is possible to amend your CVSROOT/modules file in CVS to specify a brand new CVS module including things like just the directory abc. Its merely an alias for your existing directory. The entry can be something like:
Make the entry and commit the amended modules file to CVS. Then when you fetch their list of CVS modules you may see your brand-new abc module listed. A quantity of directories, separated with a space, is usually specified following the a flag permitting you to list every one of the files/dependencies required to construct abc.
