I tested this having a USB 3.0 port while on an ASUS Zenbook ultrabook running Windows 8.1. It worked great for me personally. No problems by any means right out from the box. My first test in this drive after rebooting my notebook computer was to work with it to try out a commercial video DVD. The default setting just for this drive was DVD region 6 China but I could easily reset it from your pop-up menu to region 1, Territories, Canada, and Bermuda to experience my DVD. Presumably I could play a DVD designed for any zone by while using the same pop-up menu. This drive comes without having software, speculate my laptop came having an internal DVD RW drive and software I didn't need to buy additional software to experiment with commercial DVD disks.
Next, I used my existing Roxio Creator NXT 2 software to copy a poster audio CD from my internal drive into a blank CD in this particular external drive. This is NOT that will work with all Windows 8 devices. It will NOT work using a Surface Pro 3. I purchased this item for my husband make use of with his Surface Pro 3 and yes it would not work. When I first plugged it in, your computer recognized a different device. No big problems with downloading or drivers or anything complicated like this. I pushed the button to start the disk drawer, and it also didnt move. I tried several more times. Finally I disconnected the USB plug after which plugged it back in the computer. Then the drawer button worked. I inserted a pre-burned ready-made DVD, plus the movie worked okay. Then I tried one among my DVD movies I had burned years ago on the DVD/VCR player/burner. At first nothing happened. Finally I gave the player/burner a shake, along with the movie played. I was surprised because some newer DVD players wont even play my old self-taped DVDs. So the unit may seem to work well as being a DVD player, even though you might have to supply a shake or two to generate contact.
The the next thing I did was try and burn pictures with a CD-R which I do regularly on my own internal CD drive. Im sure the description here indicates a CD-R should work. I could hear the CD whirling around within the player, however it would never recognize the disk. I tried the same which has a DVD-R. No luck. Again, I had to provide the player/burner slightly shake in order to have it to even spin, although it never did recognize the disk.
LIke I said, Im happy to employ a DVD player to ensure that I can watch movies in my laptop when traveling, but I cant say this unit works as described. First of all, I shouldnt ought to shake it to produce contact. Second, I cant have it to recognize a blank CD or DVD to be able to burn pictures or videos.
