I am an old Army Arabic linguist, and also a graduate of DLI/FLC Monterey. This dictionary would be the primary one we used, both at DLI and later within the job. An old Army buddy, I have a deep abiding affection because of this thing, it like a true linguistic masterpiece and longtime companion.
Hans Wehr was professor at University of Munster through the fifties thru the seventies. This dictionary was published in 1952 in German as Arabisches Worterbuch fur die Schriftsprache der Gegenwart - a mouthful of the title if there ever was one. We just named it the Hans Wehr. To my knowledge, it will be the only dictionary thats organized to correctly exploit Arabic morphology, and that is to the consonal root system.
Any other approach produces a hash out with the Arab language. Straightforward alphabetical ordering is ill fitted to Arabic. The only traditionally alphabetically organized Arabic dictionary that Ive seen and Ive seen a number of which is worthwhile at all could be the Lebanese Al-Mawrid. I needed to buy this book twice, the next time I bought the standard sized version that's about 6 x 9. This particular version being reviewed here's just TOO small , you will need to purchase a magnifying glass in order to attempt to look at the script - after which youll struggle to anyway for the reason that ink is just too thick. You are more satisfied not getting this version within the first place and purchasing the larger version - keep in mind that you will not regret that decision. BTW, I have totally normal vision, no glasses, no sight problems for anyone who is wondering!!!

The Hans Wehr Arabic-English dictionary is just the totally indispensable. I don't realize how you cold manage learning Arabic without one! I studied Arabic for countless years, but got more use using this dictionary than out of every other reference source BY FAR. If you dont keep in mind that, I wish I could teach you a picture of my dictionary now - - its been used a great deal its in pieces obviously, I need to go out and buy a fresh one!. The most difficult thing which may get frustrating, but such as a puzzle, when you finally unlock the secrets, everything starts clicking into place is youve got to find out the root of an word and discover it in here. But thats the process - - and wonder - - of Arabic, most likely the worlds richest, most poetic, amazing language; after you know the basis a whole whole world of rich variations within the basic root meaning DRSstudy; mudarristeacher, or one who MAKES you study! actually starts to open up. Hard to get dictionary. Was very excited to locate this. Easy to use, sized perfect and easy to travel through. Great for anybody studying Arabic.
This is just not a beginnersstudent dictionary. This is made for native speakers or advanced students. Didnt suit me.

Still an initial student not even qualified to inquire into many aspects of the dictionary, I am however very happy with the large, clear, easy-on-the-eyes Arabic font on this full-size edition. I steered away from your smaller formatted and cheaper edition for fear that as a fresh reader I would not be able for making out the intricate script. Years ago as being a student of Khmer, another fairly intricate writing system, I first found myself reading documents with a magnification device ., but once I reached an even more advanced level everything seemed clear enough. I imagine it requires most students a little while to adjust to what initially seems to be very strange and tiny scribbles. Most Arabic entries seem fully voweled, so I usually do not see the requirement for the English phonetics that another reviewer demanded. I used the Fun with Arabic CD-ROM to obtain past the phonetics. Im pleased at what I got for my money. I also followed another reviewers suggestion and ordered the Al Mawrid dictionary also. If you are going to put from the huge timeframe required to be taught a foreign language, youd best invest early within the game.

To the one who left one star: youre an idiot. Why are you by using a dictionary in the event you cant even read both languages?
This dictionary is incredibly useful for English speakers who're serious students of Arabic. Dont even use Al-Mawrid. This would be the best dictionary around, especially in case you liked the Concise version, also published by Oxford. The typography is apparent and precise, this also dictionary has yet to influence me wrong in meaning or translation. Though Hans Wehr is more a good choice for Arabic-English translations, how's that for the gold standard within the other direction.

There is just not much choice of English - Arabic dictionaries. This one is a great one, and unlike many the Arabic text is extremely clear and legible. However, it can tend to omit the plurals in Arabic. it can not show the Arabic plural on the English word door. Nor does it provide the Arabic root in the word. Given the high price on this dictionary, these shortcomings are irritating. It would be good in the event the publisher provides rather more value for money inside next edition.

This Oxford English-Arabic dictionary that I received was adopted but in excellent condition. It is often a wonderful resource for English speakers that are trying to learn Arabic.
