Editors note September 20, 2011: Apple has released a significant software update to Final Cut Pro X. Additional features added include support for XML, custom starting time codes, Xsan event and project compatibility, support for media stems/audio channeling, full-screen view toggle for Lion users, and GPU acceleration.
The net profit: Final Cut Pro X is a dramatic rewrite of Apples mature and well-developed video-editing software. It borrows some interface components from iMovie that will disappoint seasoned professionals, and also it loses many key features which are simply a certain necessity from the professional world, like XML export. On the other hand, those aiming to upgrade from iMovie will see a lot more features in Final Cut Pro X, but there are numerous caveats.
Final Cut Pro Xs bold philosophy of video editing will surely take some becoming familiar with, however in return, editors will likely be rewarded with blazing performance as well as a future where tapes are as outdated as wax cylinders. For amateur video editors, iMovie continues to be best balance of features, simplicity, and price. At this stage, Final Cut Pro X is really a 1.0 product which still needs some other development. However, Apple has laid the groundwork for versions 2.0 and 3.0 to get much more compelling and usable.
Its been 3 years since Apple last updated its venerable Final Cut Studio 3 suite of applications. FCS 3, because it was known, included Final Cut Pro 7, DVD Studio Pro 4, Motion 4, Soundtrack Pro 3, Color 1.5, and Compressor 3.5. Forces are in work changing the concept of video editing, and also the most hardened video-editing professionals will explain that editing would need to evolve.
First, the expense of productions has dropped drastically from the last number of years. An indie film a decade ago probably have achieved some notoriety if you are shot over a consumer MiniDV camcorder, however, these days youll discover the same Canon 5D Mark II which you have at home over a 1 million set.
Second, information technology has gotten a lot quicker, with multithreaded cores and GPUs that could generate lifelike 3D graphics at 120 frames per second at resolutions double that relating to even 1080p video.
Now, think about the frustrations that editors feel when running Final Cut Pro on the Mac Pro with 16GB of RAM and eight cores, only to find that FCP can just address 4GB of memory in support of a few operations and codecs support any multithreaded operations.
Its not really that Apple hasnt been throwing resources behind Final Cut Pro. However, oahu is the same debate that it took Apple six iterations of Mac OS X prior to company finally were able to update the ubiquitous Finder app to 64 bits: rewriting applications is tough. Even iTunes, that will be considered Apples most crucial application due to its syncing abilities for the iPod and iOS, continues to be sitting around using 32 bits.
Third, like how blogging gave everyone the cabability to compete with companies major newspapers, magazines, and publishers, YouTube, Vimeo along with other online video-sharing sites are giving legions of wannabe filmmakers a platform to show their work and show Hollywood that you simply dont need huge amount of money to create an issue that hundreds of millions of folks will see.
Finally, lots of things can be said about Apple, but one thing how the company truly embraces is change. Ten years ago, Apple transitioned Mac OS 9 to some radically different Mac OS X. The first iteration Mac OS X 10.0 Cheetah was slow and missed basic features like DVD playback and CD burning. In the end, the radical transition to Cheetah laid the foundation in the wonderfully featured and a lot of faster Mac OS X Panther, Tiger, Leopard, Snow Leopard, and soon-to-be-released Lion.
With all of the forces at the office, Apple is performing the same transition with Final Cut Pro because it did with Mac OS. Like Cheetah, Final Cut Pro X is missing many features, a few of which likely wont allow it to become, but they also lay the groundwork for just a next generation of video editing.
Apple surprised the Mac world in the event it announced that Mac OS X Snow Leopard 10.6 wouldnt contain many major the latest features, but rather was an under-the-hood improvement towards the OS X computer. Snow Leopard brought improved performance, enhanced support for 64-bit applications, new tools like Grand Central Dispatch for multicore programming, and also a new programming framework to adopt advantage with the massive power of graphics processors called OpenCL.
The original Final Cut Pro took very little benefit of any of such new leaps because doing so was still shackled to your 10-year-old code base and 32-bit Carbon APIs.
In the modern Final Cut Pro X, Apple rewrote the full application from your ground up to finally support 64-bit Cocoa APIs, but also to adopt advantage with the power of GPUs through programming frameworks like OpenCL and multithreaded operations. The change is pretty obvious when you consider the Activity Monitor, which shows a lot more threads. Even better, the native 64-bit code now supports a practically limitless method to obtain RAM.
Final Cut Pro X is merely available through the Mac App Store. The previous Final Cut Studio was included with heavy instruction manuals, which might be now just help files in FCPX. We appreciate reducing paper waste, but be warned which the digital help files wont offer any images unless you're connected to your Internet.
Final Cut Pro X is available through the Mac App Store for any low price of 299. In comparison, the prior Final Cut Studio costs 999, fat it was included with Motion, Soundtrack Pro, Compressor, LiveType, Cinema Tools, and Color. Some of those apps have disappeared for good inside the new Final Cut Pro X with just one or two of their functionality built into the app.
For an additional 49 apiece, you can buy Motion 5 and Compressor 4 as add-on companion apps to Final Cut Pro X. Well dive into these apps a little later inside the review.
Final Cut Pro X boasts the distinction to be the first app designed for voluming licensing. Licenses for businesses and schools will likely be available through Apple Online Store for quantities of 20 if not more. Users will get a redemption code, that they can use to download the app through the Mac App Store.
Simply downloading isnt as fun the way it sounds. Final Cut Pro X is 1.33GB, also it can take hours to download should you have a slow connection. In addition, there exists 637.2MB of supplemental content like effects and backgrounds, and that is downloaded through the Mac OS X Software Update feature because its shared between applications. Additionally, Motion 5 weighs 1.09GB, and Compressor is often a relatively paltry 261MB. This will 't be fun for that eager enthusiast with time consuming DSL line.
Still, its a greater and easier installation method than the last Final Cut Studio, which required swapping out DVDs repeatedly for the hour or two.
When you firstly launch Final Cut Pro X, the existing Final Cut loading screen is replaced by way of a new semitransparent load screen that allows you to know this is actually the 10.0 iteration in the professional software. But what employs that is nothing beats the 10 previous versions of Final Cut.
Youll first notice a prominent substitute for Import iMovie Events right higher than the Import Files and Import From Camera options. If youre wondering whenever we skipped a measure, youre wrong. According to Final Cut Pro Xs help file, you dont make a project first. Instead, you import media and manage your media first. You can, however, develop a project first and import later. But it just proves you how much Apple believes that data-based video workflows are definitely the future of post-production.
FCPXs new interface borrows some style aspects of iMovie, that could really have many editors scratching their head. But first, multiple windows have largely disappeared.
Instead of windows, as with previous versions, we have now get panels. The panels have default positions, nonetheless they can fortunately be resized.
For probably the most part, the panel locations are likely to be where you want them to get, but we may have preferred more customization options. Users can specify the Viewer or perhaps the Events panels to reside on secondary monitors, nonetheless its still no match for arranging windows to whatever assembling your shed or personal preferences are.
The biggest change is the brand new Viewer. Previous users of Final Cut Pro will wonder what happened for the Viewer and Canvas windows.
They happen to be combined to a single panel referred to as the Viewer. In previous versions of Final Cut Pro, the Viewer loaded clips to edit or it let users manipulate the properties of any clip. The Canvas traditionally showed the present frame in the playhead within the Timeline. Final Cut Pro X now combines their viewer and canvas into one panel simply known as the Viewer.
Simpler is way better though, right? Actually, are not so sure.
Final Cut Pro 7 used the decades-old convention of Source and Record editing which Apple, naturally, needed to refer differently because the Viewer and Canvas. It traces back towards the day of linear editing, whenever a producer or editor would bunch one clip coming from a video deck, mark the commencement and stop, then record on into a second tape.
Old since it might be, the source/record convention is blazingly fast. Watching an expert editor is similar to watching a pianist. Loading clips, scrubbing through to obtain the perfect clip, marking an in point with an out point, then laying for the timeline may very well be accomplished without touching the mouse by any means. For Apple, its a change of philosophy.
Starting a whole new project feels a little strange as the program does little to spell out new concepts like Events. Events are Apples new means of describing media libraries. An event has the actual media files of any project, along with metadata information.
When you produce a new project, there aren't any options like resolution or codec and soon you select custom. By default, the app will choose a resolution and frame rate based on the very first clip you make use of.
You can make custom options, that can support most in the standard resolutions: 1080i, 1080p, 720p, NTSC, PAL, 2K, and 4K. The Other options curiously never let you set custom resolutions. Instead, youre limited by 640x480 pixels and 960x540 pixels. Apple says which you can use Compressor to scale and resize your videos.
Frame rates are also tied to standard NTSC, PAL, and film rates of 23.98, 24, 25, 29.97, 30, 50, 59.94, and 60 frames per second. Again, for those who have to be employed in a nonstandard frame rate, youre doomed. As a sign from your future of where Apple wants for taking video editing, FCPX supports 4K resolutions at 60 progressive frames per second.
Additionally, you will discover options for video and audio rendering, which default to Surround Sound at 48KHz, and variable bit rate ProRes 422. ProRes 422 HQ, ProRes 4444, and Uncompressed 10-bit may also be available as options, if you'd like those extra items of color information or editing by having an alpha channel. However, for many editors, ProRes 422 comes with a good balance between speed and drive space.
Perhaps by far the most unsettling behavior to date is that Final Cut Pro X doesnt enable you to specify that you want to save assembling your garden shed file inside the New Project dialog box. By default, FCPX creates new projects inside root directory of whatever drive you could have selected inside the Project Library.
This is extremely frustrating. Being able to specify an establishment for project files is very important. For example, its common with an editor to routinely save projects in network drives and organize by folders and subfolders.
Render files are saved inside the same folder because the project files. Render files are essentially media files that FCP uses to save lots of rendered work, like effects. So even if you're diligent enough to produce a new project over a separate harddrive, your render files must live from the same folder.
For Apple, its again a change of philosophy. Users lose some granularity when scouting for a scratch disk, nonetheless they get the advantage of having one particular folder they will move around, filled with their projects rendered media.
Final Cut Pro X has support for natively importing AVC-Intra, AVCHD including AVCCAM, AVCHD Lite, and NXCAM, all standard versions of DV including DVCAM, DVCPRO, DVCPRO50, and DVCPRO HD, H.264, HDV, iFrame, Motion JPEG, MPEG IMX D-10, and standard XDCAM HD/EX/HD422. Additionally, this program can import codecs backed up by QuickTime.
Gone would be the Log Capture and Log Transfer options. Instead, we merely get choices for importing media files and importing files from your camera. The new Final Cut Pro X really embraces a file-based workflow.
The closest option might be the Import From Camera. This is not exactly the same as Log Transfer. Its kind of an attempt at combing capture from tape and capture from memory sources. The new import interface does support FireWire which enables it to read mounted memory cards, and also control playback options while using classic JKL rewind-pause-play keys.
It doesnt support importing some kinds of files. For XDCAM users, Apple recommends installing Sonys own transfer and transcoding utility. HDV is supported, but oddly only over tape on FireWire. Youll ought to wait for HDV import from MXF files. Nor does FCPX keep the ultrahigh-quality RED RAW natively. For now, you may set up your RED camera to record QuickTime movie files, which FCPX can import natively, or you are able to use REDs own free conversion program to convert into Apples native ProRes format. Apple says it really is working with manufacturers like Sony and Red to produce plug-ins that will permit FCPX to become a one-stop-shop for importing video.
Final Cut Pro X comes with a Supported Cameras page, but it really isnt providing wed like, nor would it be completely current. For example, importing P2 footage into the modern FCPX may be possible, but it can be not included inside the Support Cameras page. Also, it is also not entirely obvious that some formats like P2 have to get imported throughout the Import From Camera option instead of the Import Files option.
On the intense side, no less than it natively props up the iPhone 3GS, iPhone 4, iPad 2, and iPod Touch.
If you actuallyhave compatible files or footage to import into Final Cut Pro X, there are a few great new options that offer you a taste of the Apple has been taking care of these last 36 months of developing FCPX.
You can develop a new event, or you can complement an existing event. Fortunately, you can come up which drive youd prefer to import your footage to out of this dialog box. By default, Final Cut Pro X will copy over your media files and automatically organize the footage available for you using Content Auto-Analysis.
Content Auto-Analysis is possibly one from the coolest latest features of Final Cut Pro X. Not only do you find the standard metadata that FCPX would collect like frame rate, codec, resolution, and even more, nonetheless it also borrows some technology from iPhoto and iMovie to automatically detect people within the shot along with shot size.
Additionally, Content Auto-Analysis analyzes footage for color balance, audio problems, shaky footage, and in many cases the notorious rolling shutter distortion that comes about with many CMOS-based cameras when panning. FCPX will even transcode supported footage since it imports into native ProRes in addition to create small proxy media files, if you are working over a low-power machine. Other smart features include to be able to intelligently group mono or stereo audio channels and take silent audio channels.
The Events Library organizes your media inside a tree together with the main branches being the difficult drives linked to your system. But not simply any drives will likely be recognized in FCPX; Apple says spinning disks, which means you wont see USB drives. As far as we realize, neither will Xsan, NFS, AFP, or SMB-mounted volumes appear inside Event Library.
There a variety of things from the above sentence that could make a number of people unhappy, but fortunately, you may import footage to your local Event Library and never have to copy over gigabytes of web data. Final Cut Pro X will provide links for your remote media. Just be sure to deselect the copy files to FCPXs events folder, otherwise the media are going to be copied to whatever drive you could have set up for ones events.
Within the Event Library may be the Event Browser, which is where much on the magic with the new Final Cut Pro X lives. Previous versions of Final Cut Pro X had fairly limited metadata abilities. You could comment and mark a clip like a good or bad take, but the newest FCPX brings metadata into the concept of Google.
When importing footage, Smart Collections will automatically produce a number of premade groups according to things like regardless of if the shot is often a wide, medium, or close-up. It will also detect people and group them together.
The power on the new metadata engine derives from its extensibility. Users are now able to create their unique keyword tags, and also tag-specific parts of clips using custom keywords. All this tagging and metadata becomes incredibly powerful once you realize that Final Cut Pro X adds search capabilities.
For example, an individual can tag each of the footage of the interviewee, and after that perform looking query in search of medium-only shots for the interviewee. Loggers and assistant editors are going to be much happier. Apple also says which the metadata engine is going to be extensible via third-party plug-ins, so that it wont be too far from your day that individuals see plug-ins that transcribe and auto-sync transcripts to video.
Finally, the Event Browser in Final Cut Pro X eliminates the Media Manager in Final Cut Pro 7, and today within your Events Library, you are able to create lightweight proxy versions for taking on the road over a laptop.
One project, one timeline
As you see the quirks with the new interface, a very important factor that might stop so obvious is that there may be exactly one timeline or sequence to every single project.
That might sound natural for amateur video editors, but its a serious change for professionals. Editors routinely duplicate sequences from the same project, so that should you have to go back to your previous version because the revolutionary sequence just didnt determine, its in front of them. For now, Apple says if you want to build a snapshot in the current sequence, you are able to use the Duplicate feature within the menu bar, which creates a whole new copy of your respective current project. Fortunately, projects may be viewable on the Project Library.
While many will probably be upset that projects are only able to contain one particular timeline, Apple has really rethought the existing track-based timelines, and from the process created some innovations that will make the deficiency of multiple timelines more palatable.
Final Cut Pro Xs most touted feature has got for being the new Magnetic Timeline and the many features that build off it. Tracks have disappeared, and instead we've what Apple calls lanes. Because with this, your tool, the Track tool, fully gone, simply because you dont need it anymore.
Like lanes of traffic, clips automatically make room for example another after you move them for the timeline, therefore you never must worry about accidentally overwriting a tabs on audio or video. Its magnetic because clips automatically ripple eliminate the gap between clips or move out from the way for making room for first time clips.
New and amateur video editors will appreciate the Magnetic Timeline, but it really is going to require some time and use before you see many professional editors embracing it. Most professional editors wont face it, but perform spend a lot of time making room for clips we need to insert, closing up gaps and keeping all things in sync. Admittedly, we look for ourselves itching to press the T key for your Track tool to create some space inside the timeline.
Without source and record windows, Apples replacement with the classic Trim Mode is the Inline Precision Editor. By just double-clicking about the border where two clips meet, the Inline Precision Editor will expand the clips to show the many footage available inside outgoing and incoming clips.
As many gripes as we may have with the decrease of separate Viewer and Canvas windows, the Inline Precision Editor can be a much better take a look at footage than Trim Mode. You may now easily see how considerably more footage you might have left in each clip. Once you've got extended or decreased the choice, the timeline ripples each of the changes from the sequence, keeping all things in sync.
Built on top from the Magnetic Timeline is the brand new Clip Connections feature. In previous Final Cut Pro apps, you would ought to tediously separate the clips at a sequence before moving them around. Now, with Clip Connections, it is possible to have multiple waste video, title and audio move around for the time line and remain perfectly in sync.
Building along with Clip Connections and also the Magnetic Timeline are Compound Clips.
In large projects, once youve finished an intricate scene or segment, you may now group every one of the audio, title, and video tutorials together to act as being a single massive clip. Its a lttle bit like nested sequences, but much simpler to use. Effects is usually applied like a whole onto Compound Clips, and video will even be retimed as you giant clip. All the while, they remain perfectly in sync. Apple says editors wont have to make multiple sequences for every single scene, but are able to use compound clips instead.
Often, an editor are going to be the only individual that has seen every one of the footage, and also the time directors and producers join edit sessions, an editor can have likely laid out your core elements and structure of an video piece.
Inevitably, though, the producer or director will need to see alternate takes. And pulling apart a sequence to slip within an alternate clip is a serious headache.
Auditioning will alleviate a great deal of that pain. Editors can check out alternate takes through marking an in as well as an out on alternate clips, drag them into the existing clip about the timeline, and select Add to Audition. As you experiment with alternate takes, the Magnetic Timeline only will ripple around, treatment of gap or making room for clips of numerous lengths.
Because practically every part in the Final Cut Pro X application is unique from its predecessor, it likely isnt a surprise to several that your old 32-bit Final Cut Pro 7 plug-ins wont work with the revolutionary FCPX. Thats not to mention that Apple is giving up around the third-party plug-in community. In fact, its depending on it heavily to fill out some missing features.
Final Cut Pro X comes complete which has a new plug-in architecture that is certainly 64-bit from your start, called FxPlug 2. Developers can access the entire specification, on Apples Developer Web site, and its particular been rearchitectured for taking advantage on the new high-performance, multithreaded, floating-point rendering engine.
The work that Apple has put into the brand new rendering engine really shows. Effects could be applied in real some time to require hardly any rendering. You may see some resolution drops plus a few frames here or there, but also in our tests it stayed all-around real-time performance.
Applying effects hasn't been easier. Instead of dragging and dropping effects and choosing a coffee break to watch for it to render, it is possible to simply press play from the timeline and take a look at different effects and appearance in real time by hovering within the effect from the Effects Browser.
There can be quite a lot for getting used to if this comes to your changes for the user interface and missing features, but one area where the revolutionary Final Cut Pro X deserves universal praise is performance.
In fact, when Apple product marketing managers first demoed FCPX to us, they did not utilize a top-of-the-line, tricked-out Mac Pro. Instead, they used a non-SSD 27-inch iMac, the identical computer that numerous Mac desktop users have. All the while, i was applying real-time effects and color corrections to untranscoded, 1080p H.264 dSLR footage. In contrast, previous versions of Final Cut would force you to render dSLR footage in a very codec like ProRes or DVCPRO HD.
While the earlier versions of Final Cut Pro at their maximum at 4GB of usable RAM, Apple says users should anticipate to see a dramatic performance raise the more RAM you throw at FCPX. Final Cut Pro X uses Grand Central Dispatch to harness the many computing power within the new multicore CPUs and in many cases supports Intels new AVX instruction set extensions within the newly released Sandy Bridge processors.
Final Cut Pro X also requires an OpenCL-compatible graphics card. Be careful, though, and dont think that every Mac that Apple has released within the last number of years is OpenCL-capable. At CNET, we needed to switch out our dual-quad-core Mac Pros standard ATI Radeon HD 2600 card for any ATI Radeon HD 3870, for the reason that former didnt meet Apples OpenCL requirements.
Part of Final Cut Pro Xs new performance increase derives from background processing. While youre pondering your following edit, FCPX makes use of those down cycles to execute a amount of different tasks including transcoding, content auto-analysis for stabilize shaky footage, or removing background noise from audio. Final Cut Pro X even carries a Background Task window, which will show you exactly what FCPX is doing and in some cases offers some manual controls like pausing or canceling an identification process.
The new Final Cut Pro X is certainly much faster than its predecessor, nonetheless it still maintains high display quality throughout its rendering engine. The new rendering engine is floating-point based and utilizes a much wider color space, meaning you can blow out your highlights in a effect and convey back detail in to the image with another effect. All the while, FCPX maintains accurate color profiles using ColorSync, which means you wont have fret a lot of about the differences between ITU 709 HD colors and NTSC Never Twice Same Color.
Unfortunately, that exceptional color management goes toward waste because as of at the moment, Final Cut Pro X doesnt support monitoring on professional broadcast monitors. Apple does say that it truly is working closely with partners like AJA and Black Magic Design show them Thunderbolt- and PCIe-based accessories which will allow FCPX to both capture footage from an outside source just like a tape deck and output via industry-standard HD-SDI ports. Still, its a serious disappointment that for the moment, Final Cut Pro X users will ought to trust their computer monitors and know that it likely wont look precisely the same once it hits a genuine television set or gets projected inside a screening room.
Many video professionals are actually wondering for many years when Motion would step up into your big leagues of compositing after it shuttered its Academy Award-winning Shake compositing program. While the revolutionary Motion 5 inherits Final Cut Pro Xs change and high-quality rendering engine, it really is not Shake for mere mortals. And Apple says it is just not intended to become.
Motion graphics designers can now create Smart Motion Templates with editable parameters that may be rigged together. For example, a motion graphics artist can provide motion graphic titles several variations with some other colors and font sizes that actually work together. Editors can adjust these rigs with simple sliders, pop-up menus, or check boxes.
Motion 5s new Smart Motion Templates will also be more intelligent than their predecessor. Artists may now define intro animations and out animations, but leave a versatile title body to install the correct timing inside the middle. The days of slicing motion graphics and fading relating to the two to increase a title which simply wasnt for enough time to cover an edit have ended.
The best improvement to Final Cut Pro X motion graphics is that you simply can now edit the words right inside Viewer panel. No more examining a titles controls from the Viewer, changing a little of text, and after that clicking somewhere else about the timeline for ones text to update.
Finally, Final Cut Pro X also comes that has a new Apple-made chroma keyer. Primatte is gone on the package, but Apple says which the new chroma keyer is best than ever. It utilizes the identical 64-bit high-quality rendering engine, and our limited testing shows it to become at least on par with Motion 4s Primatte keyer.
The other companion app from the Final Cut Pro X suite is Compressor 4. For probably the most part, it seems a lot like its previous incarnations, but Apple has cleaned up some in the interface, mostly by obtaining rid of dozens of extra Compressor presets that almost all people only ever used within a blue moon.
Many Final Cut Pro X users may never use Motion 5, nevertheless its far more likely which they would use Compressor 4. Considering Final Cut Pro X lost support for laying off video to tape, its a lot more important that editors employ a compression tool like Compressor 4 to upload files to YouTube, Vimeo, FTP, or whatever future platform, though admittedly FCPX builds some upload functions right into your menu bar.
Other improvements to Compressor include support for Apples new HTTP live-streaming standard. The moniker is really a bit misleading, however. Compressor 4 doesn't gain the opportunity to encode live video streams. HTTP live streaming remains to be file-based, but it really does help it become a lot better to generate multi-bit-rate H.264 videos, as well as the accompanying.M3U playlist. HTML5 video the H.264 variety is often a whole lot easier now with all of the files located in the single folder, and yes it includes an HTML5 JavaScript-based video player.
Finally, Compressor 4 incorporates Apples Qmaster rendering engine in the application itself rather than as being a separate background application or installation. Users may now designate encoding nodes inside the application to consider advantage of unused CPU cores or machines in your network. You will, however, have to install Compressor 4 on other machines on the network to consider advantage in the distributed encoding.
Say goodbye to DVD Studio Pro, Color, and Soundtrack Pro
Well get started with DVD Studio Pro. Its not returning. Apple sees iTunes since the future label of media distribution, in case youve been following a development of Final Cut Studio, youll be aware that DVD Studio Pro hasnt really changed in than 5 years. Final Cut Pro X does include to be able to burn DVDs from your application, but dont kid yourself. It is nowhere close on the power and customizability of DVD Studio Pro. If you absolutely still need to generate DVDs, you try Adobes Encore application.
Color was always the odd-man out inside the Final Cut Studio suite. Originally, it absolutely was called FinalTouch and got its start by Silicon Color before the company was acquired by Apple. But it turned out always obvious that this app had not been very Apple-like, nor would be the idea of stepping out of one's video-editing application to carry out a color correction.
The new Final Cut Pro X incorporates most with the basic popular features of Color without ever having to leave the applying. Color correction is not really a special effect, however it is built into every clip you lay about the timeline. By just tabbing over, youll be able to produce global color corrections within FCPX, in addition to additional secondaries. The color board does take a lttle bit of becoming familiar with, and several users will miss Final Cut Pros iconic three-way color corrector. In return, however, they are going to get features like masking as well as selective keying to produce fine adjustments.
Its quite a bit less powerful as Color. You wont manage to track faces or moving elements on-screen. For that, Apple recommends using Motion 5s built-in trackers and color correction engine.
Finally, we obtain to Soundtrack Pro. Fortunately, Final Cut Pro X upgrades much from the audio-editing tools. For instance, sound may now be edited to precision levels. One reason you needed apps like Soundtrack was because Final Cut Pro audio tools still lived inside a world where frames are king. Editors world wide know the pain and frustration when trying to remove that half-frame long pop or click. As part of Final Cut Pro Xs massive rewrite, this company also included support for 64-bit Audio Unit plug-ins. Even better is the fact they support Audio Unit plug-in custom interfaces, therefore you dont need to worry about using imprecise sliders to create your adjustments.
Honestly, though, Soundtrack will not be an application we are going to miss much; others might disagree. Yes, you might clean up audio, mix multiple tracks, to check out sound effects, but inside professional world, Soundtrack Pro simply failed to compare with all the industry-standard Pro Tools, that leads us into probably the biggest gripe of.
OMG! Where include the EDLs, AAFs, OMFs, and XMLs?
If you dont determine what these acronyms mean, youre not likely a person who must upgrade to Final Cut Pro X. Also, if youve browse the early reviews of Final Cut Pro X, then none of the items were on the verge of say are going to be a surprise. Final Cut Pro X is really a complete overhaul of an very mature application. Unfortunately, Apple did not include some features that arent simply missed, but they are very important.
As great as Final Cut Pro Xs new tools are, they just arent a match for dedicated applications like DaVinci Resolve for color correcting or Pro Tools for audio editing. Virtually, every post production facility for sound uses Pro Tools.
Fortunately, Automattic Duck is filling from the major void featuring its Pro Export FCP 5.0 plug-in. With the Pro Export FCP plug-in, users are going to be able to export tracks to Pro Tools at 96KHz, 24-bit quality. Still, its a waste that pro video-editing software doesnt try this natively. Its even more of the hit to your gut whenever you also recognize that Pro Export FCP 5.0 doesnt come cheap at 495.
As far as EDLs and AAF export options, you aren't likely to discover their whereabouts in future updates for the software. Apple says its priority should be to build XML export, therefore we expect third-party companies to think of XML-to-EDL or XML-to-AAF online translating services.
Our last file compatibility gripe: Final Cut Pro X does not include the import of Final Cut Pro 7 project files. For some editors, this wont be much of an big issue. Its a piece of writing of faith that you just never buy some new NLE software inside the middle of post-production. But customers with rock-bottom prices a time whenever you need to crack open a well used project file to seize a still or rejigger an edit. The official Apple line to date is so it wont be developing FCP7-to-FCPX file conversion tools. The company says that because in the major architecture changes, it will create more problems than it'd solve.
Final Cut Pro X 10.0 is an essential, bold step in the new way forward for post-production, where tapes are an anachronism plus a single application are designed for all of one's color grading, title effects and sound-editing needs. Its clear on the price and the modern workflow of FCPX that Apple believes that video are going to be even more ubiquitous inside the near future.
It wasnt too long ago that writing for your masses meant landing a coveted job at an important newspaper, however blogging came around. Now, anybody with barely a modicum connected with an interesting thought can blog, along with the writing is visible by millions. Apple believes precisely the same thing with video.
There are three categories of users the new Final Cut Pro X might entice, and each of them, you'll find three different conclusions.
For professionals, it is tough to recommend Final Cut Pro X 10.0 rolling around in its current state being a replacement or upgrade to Final Cut Pro 7, Avid, or no matter what the preferred nonlinear editor.
Enlightened editors who envision manufactured that file-based workflows are going to be the norm still need to deal using the reality which the network still wants an HDCAM SR archive. To be sure, the bean counters wont be happy when an editor asks to switch a rack of 100, 000 HDCAM SR decks that theyre still paying off on an SD card reader plus a pair of 100 drives.
The company has recently assured us that it are going to be updating Final Cut Pro X with many much needed features, like XML export and multicam-editing support. Third-party manufacturers like AJA and Black Magic Design might be releasing Thunderbolt and PCIe accessories soon that can let editors lay off to tape and professionally monitor on broadcast-quality displays. Automattic Duck has recently released something to export FCPX sequences to OMF.
Apple has now said that this company is going to be moving with a more rapid release schedule, but it really would not a surprise to find out an update to FCPX within the next couple of months instead with the next couple of years. Meanwhile, Apple says your existing Final Cut Pro 7 setup still works. It would also cease a surprise if Apple makes Final Cut Studio still readily available for purchase again inside the interim.
For amateur video editors, Final Cut Pro X will not be iMovie Pro. Its iMovie way excessive. Clip connection can be amazing whenever a producer desires to see the scene moved around, however it is too much for amateurs, who just need to edit your part where they forgot to seal off the videocamera. The latest version of iMovie is often a fine video-editing program, and yes it comes using a whole suite of programs like iPhoto that video-making newbies may find immensely more useful. Still, if you're willing to spend the cash to sample pro features and havent used the app for decades like professionals, you might obtain the new means of doing things more palatable.
In simple terms, for the portion with the post-production world that keeps a balanced view and is comfortable with all the lack of tape, XML, and Pro Tools support, Final Cut Pro X will be worth your consideration. Still, we cant help but believe sticking with Final Cut Studio 3 or waiting some months for Final Cut Pro X 10.1 makes life a small bit easier about the blades edge.
Editors note: Wilson G. Tang is really a CNET and CBS producer, who's got directed, shot and edited award-winning pieces. He hosts a regular technology and culture show on CNET called The 404. As a video and film professional, he's had almost several of exposure to Final Cut Pro and also other nonlinear video-editing software over a day-to-day basis. In addition, he's had extensive experience within the field, using anything from film cameras to new digital cinema camcorders that shoot to memory cards.
From Apple: At the guts of Final Cut Pro X will be the Magnetic Timeline, a trackless way of editing your footage that allows add and arrange clips wherever you long for them, while other clips instantly slide out from the way. You will use Clip Connections to link primary story clips with other elements like titles and sounds, to make sure they stay in perfect sync once you move them. You can also combine related story elements in a Compound Clip that could be edited being a single clip. The groundbreaking new Auditions feature permits you to swap from your collection of clips to instantly compare alternate takes.
Some people like new stuff.
Where to Hard to come up with something which hasnt also been said, so Ill just reiterate. Even using the update, its still merely a good product. Still missing a lot with the items was great around the last FCS, the worst being which it cant import old files. Seriously Apple, what had you been thinking to be able. As others have said, this should are actually a new FCE. The extra features and interface don't overcome precisely what is missing. Used it on another system and won't buy it myself. Sticking with FCS3 for provided that I can. So disappointed in Apple. Worse, CNET keeps asking me to upgrade looking to download it, however many times I tell it to not. STOP ASKING!!!
Lion is kinda terrible too, but ML is okay. Would never upgrade if I didnt need iCloud as MobileMe is ending. If this is an indication of where theyre deciding to look at things, it will not bode well for Apples future.
How the heck am I gonna download this over a Telkom ADSL line in South Africa?
The rest of you are able to be the Im sitting tight with FCS3 - professional tools to get a professional job. When Apple is capable of supporting me with OMF export, deck control and also other industry standards, then/maybe/Ill fo the time being, why bother?
Great feel and good speed, bad in the event you create footage
You cannot easily use created instead of recorded footage each and every change takes a re-import and re-edit.
media management is limiting; you can make use of disk images though.
fun, but I sure can be ticked if I designed a living with it. Note the price is just not great - the very last upgrade I got for fcs was 299 understanding that included every one of the apps as I recall, not simply fcp. I like Motion 5 for one of the most part, style of like the earlier one that has a new ui and faster and slicker - kind of the items I think I was expecting from FCP. Over all, I am deploying it since I am a one-man-band as well as the integrated features like color matching are fantastic for me since before this I never bothered to spend time doing color correction or grading.
This product is often a Huge Letdown!
64 Bit not important though with so little professional functionality.
Everything that has been professional about Final Cut studio isn't in this App. The re-written architecture is sensless and seems being done by the complete non-professional.
If this can be Apples step of progress I will have to look at 2 steps back and learn Avid leave Mac for PC.
Powerful Media Management section that permits you to find, edit and tag your media files, especially useful large projects with some other shots. Overall faster and indeed background rendering.
The interface overall will need editors with optimised workflows according to previous version to rethink media management and acquire used to your more iMovie interface. Some 3rd party plugins might not exactly work.
Highly recommend so it can have a go without replacing your setup. You can run 2 versions in parallel with out a problem. You may need to learn FCPX on smaller and simpler projects first to know as you go. There is really a learning curve and a few features might be invisible at the first look. It is really a disruptive approach that I think may benefit the editor along the track. It is worthwhile to commence with this version and acquire into learning the main points of this version, as I expect that future version will build upon and surely improve other things when we go.
Well Organized GUI, Powerful Video Editing Tools!
this program revolutionized the market. will not switch

I have already been a Mac fanatic for several years, and have already been with FCP since v1.0. For the record, I am currently editing several complex one-hour docs now, one of these with FCP and another on Premiere, and am a business trainer on FCP. No editing package is perfect, and I can make a perfectly good rant about Premieres deficiencies, but around the balance I dont like taking care of FCP. For the benefit from the Mac police, Windows 7 continues to be rock-solid, approximately I dislike using the services of it.
To me, editing an intricate project is similar to playing chess. When I am releasing the mouse button I am already thinking several moves ahead. With FCP, however, you've to hover over each edit. I can never quite get over a good creative roll because I am constantly diverted a toronto injury lawyer to manually do a little niggling little task that other editors do automatically, as well as the three-point editing model here practically demands you treat it as being a linear editor. All the little things which you need automated arent and all of the big issues you dont want are. The constant weight of little distractions makes for the long editing day.
Even in the event you disagree with everything Ive said - that is fine, every one of us work differently - no serious editor can deny that FCPs browser is, well, terrible. Media management can be a pain. Its inconceivable that this v1 browser remains to be with us. There is no icon view with comments, a miserable icon list view, icons tend not to automatically or conveniently arrange themselves so when they do long file names prevent a clean arrangement, folders are poorly designed, long file names tend not to wrap or abbreviate, there's no indication if your clip is used about the timeline. Thank you for ones feedback.Complete video editing suite. Editing, Motion Graphics, Color Correction, Compression, Sound Recording and editing DVD authoring.
Some of the are simple to understand. I found Final Cut editing for being easy make use of. Most of it is difficult to know, but powerful to implement. Buy the PeachTree Apple Certification books.
I am not an expert only at that. Here is what I found.
The Color suite is a bit more Unix based and won't use the Apple file system, so when you have multiple computer drives and are unsure UNIX well, you may have a hard time finding your files. I have 18 drives hooked up to my machine. I threw in the towel and tabled further study until later. Next time Ill move the files onto my scratch disk with Finder and work with project entirely there. I was disappointed the modern version wouldn't fix this. It looks being a Unix program, not just a clean looking Apple interface. Truthfully, I wouldn't put a lot of time into Color. Ive seen professional demonstrations, and want I recorded them. Those guys help it become look simple.
I found the sound editing package did wonders, shifting between serious amounts of frequency domains managed to make it easy to edit out pops of sound, mic thuds, etc. However, I could not re-import into Final Cut. More study needed.
The shear variety of video formats will melt your mind. I may have to take a training course on that. I wish it had been more simple. Frankly I dont understand a lot of that. Pro Res 422 is really a common format, but there will also be iPod formats, SD formats, ok the volume of formats is just about 30 approximately. That is often a lot of different formats. Someone explain whatever they all are used by, and present me a approach to blank your non-US formats.
Motion graphics seemed somewhat easy make use of, which has a book to get a study guide. Read more
Thank you to your feedback. If you are intent on video editing and you're a Mac user, you don't need to look any additional than this package. This is great with the professional video editor/producer as well as being the hobbyist. Like any sophisticated program, there can be a bit of your learning curve but once you comprehend some basic principles, the complete package works together beautifully. THe great thing about this package is always that anyone can have the identical tools the important boys do today to produce professional quality productions. I recommended it. If you dont have a very Mac computer, this is often a great reason to have the switch.
Thank you for ones feedback.I are already using Final Cut Studio for editing video approximately 5 years now. I bought it and my MacPro 2.1 being compatible that has a big client. At first I hated becoming I missed features that my previous software Avid Liquid 7 had had.
I did get accustomed to it pretty quickly despite the severe LACK OF MANUALS! Im not planning to bore you with griping further here can be a list of pluses and minuses:
Pros: Very Affordable. Great CODECS. Excellent Colour Corrector in FCP - so great I never even open the specialised Color program. Compressor is really a fantastic encoder and can run multicore, rendering it really fast. DVD Studio Pro is easy make use of and is successful. Soundtrack Pro is set with features and contains a great sound library. however see STP cons below Motion does most of the items you need and also the timeline runs in real time.
Cons FCP: No Manuals. No Background Rendering. Sorting and finding clips in bins is badly implemented.
Cons Motion: No Manuals. Problems with Shadows in 3D. Poor Keying jacks. Not even on precisely the same planet as After Effects!
Cons Compressor: No Manuals. Heaven help you if you'd like to uninstall and must attempt to re-in stall!!!
Cons Soundtrack Pro: No Manuals. Despite its seductive tools set, I was required to stop using STP since it will not output projects reliably - much less Pro. Random Automation being the primary culprit. Logic increases results but just isn't a Post app like STP is supposed to become - sad.
Cons DVD Studio Pro: No Manuals. NO BLURAY SUPPORT. Yes - NO BLURAY SUPPORT AT ALL!!!!!
Cons Live Type: Although Apple discontinued the astonishing Live Type app in FCS 3 it is going to still keep the files - unfortunately, the following version will never. Motion is supposed to exchange it - yeah right!
Thank you on your feedback. Its working great and was a great price.

I cant thanks a lot enough just for this course. I had been battling between buying a classic version of FCPro7, a whole new version of 10 or Adobe Premier Pro. I decided on Adobe although I knew Id have another learning curve to ride out. So I did research online and found a Master Class by Infinite Skills. WOW! I am in love using the product already because of this EXCELLENT instruction. Easy that you follow, great voice and manner, well organized and abundant downloadable practice tools and tips. After 1 day, my knowledge and confidence have raised dramatically. I know Ive made the best choice in software AND in using this amazing course. THANK YOU! Rebecca M.
Im almost done using the Advanced Microsoft Excel 2010 Training course and am completely satisfied while using instruction. This really afflicted me with a boost inside my new job and possesses increased my efficiency tenfold. Kevin K.
Learning Adobe Illustrator CS6 Andys style is conversational, nevertheless he manages to clarify the use of each tool or technique very thoroughly. The sequence on the lectures is incredibly well handled, with each lesson builds within the last. There are plenty of exercise files, although I didnt really need to utilize them, as watching him walk through each topic was sufficient. Andys voice and intonation are extremely very very easy to listen to for just a long time I did each one of these lectures within just 2 days - ! I strongly suggest this course to anyone seeking to get a comprehensive grounding in Adobe Illustrator. Id never used Illustrator before starting this system, and already feel confident enough in using this program to complete work with my commercial clients! Im likely to look for more courses by Andy, as hes this can be the best teacher Ive experienced up to now. Samalah G.

Apple today released its initial update to Final Cut Pro X with latest features it says professional customers happen to be asking for, along that has a new trial version users can test out without cost.
Among the biggest latest features added as part of your software update that ran out to users this morning is support for XML. This adds the choice to both import and export projects and events inside XML format, meaning users might take XML formatted projects and focus on them in Final Cut Pro X.
Now you are able to import and export Final Cut Pro X project and Event information with a rich XML format, Apples Final Cut Pro X page reads. XML interchange enables a wide choice of third-party workflows, including high-end visual effects, color grading, and media asset management. Blackmagic Designs DaVinci Resolve, Square Box Systems CatDV, and lots of other third-party applications will give you XML-based work flows with Final Cut Pro X.
That addition addresses one with the potential sticking points for upgraders, who have been left struggling to open old Final Cut Pro projects inside newer version from the software. XML support brings that indirectly, as users can export Final Cut Pro 7 projects in XML, then import them into Final Cut Pro X by way of a third-party tool like CatDV from Square Box. Shortly after the making, Apple posted a faq's page, noting how the XML feature would be ever coming back alongside a small number of other additions.
Support for events and projects through Xsan, the companys technology which allows multiple computers to concurrently access storage
Support for media stems or audio channeling. This lets users assign a job to media once its imported, in order that when its time to export things such as dialogue, sound files, and soundtracks, those exports might be done within a single pass.
On the trunk end on the software, Apples also taken a stride towards making Final Cut Pro more that will work with new gear from camera manufacturers from the form of an new software development kit. The SDK lets camera makers write plug-ins because of their new cameras into Final Cut Pro X, using the onus off Apple to time major new Final Cut releases with new camera hardware.
We realized that lots of professionals desired to adopt these cameras quite quickly, in like manner address the needs in the professionals, we disconnected the requirements the camera vendors had with your release cycles, said Richard Townhill, Apples senior director of applications product marketing in a very phone interview. Now it means every time a camera vendor releases a new professional camera, they are able to release under their particular control support because of it under Final Cut Pro.
Besides the feature updates, Apple is continuing its efforts to entice potential upgrader hold-outs having a free trial with the software plus a guide to ease the transitions for Final Cut Pro 7 users.
That free trial version gives users an entire version on the software in download form from Apple, that could work for 30 days from your time its first launched. Apple provides a similar trial offer for its Aperture photo management and editing software, which can be also geared towards professionals. Townhill noted that users who upgrade on the full version are going to be able to grab where they left off, with projects and events arriving automatically.
Alongside the trial, Apples also publishing information called Final Cut Pro X for Final Cut Pro 7 Editors PDF, which may be designed to walk users from the older software through whats changed. That joins an updated version in the Final Cut Pro X commonly asked questions page, which went up in late June announcing future software updates that may bring capabilities.
Following this update, Apple will likely be releasing another that literally brings multicam editing and support for broadcast video monitors. However, that update isnt expected until buy, Townhill said.
Apple faced a backlash pursuing the release of Final Cut Pro X captured. Many professionals found the software to get too much of an departure in the previous version, and chided the business for not taking along key features. Apple responded by reportedly issuing refunds to unhappy buyers, in addition to posting the FAQ. Competitors like Adobe and Avid responded by deep discounts on the software to switchers, with Adobe recently mentioning who's had seen a large amount of Apple Final Cut Pro customers switching to Adobe Premiere Pro, being a result.
Were pretty good when it reaches this stuff actually, Townhill said in the change from Final Cut Pro to Final Cut Pro X. We possess a long good reputation for successful transitions: OS 9 to OS X, PowerPC to Intel. We know weve done something revolutionary with Final Cut Pro, therefore we sincerely believe our professional customers will adore it. And some of that may be letting them know we are going to make good around the promises we made, as well as the Final Cut Pro X 10.1 update is the 1st public indication that had been doing that.
